The Chlois Theory is the theory that Chloe Sullivan is actually iconic Lois Lane in disguise. "Gemini", like "Blue", further highlighted Lois’ deficiencies.
In the previous installments I looked at the pro and anti ILL anvils for both Chloe and Lois in "Kara" and "Action", "Wrath", and "Blue". Here is the breakdown for "Gemini":
Pro-Chloe is ILL Anvils
- Chloe has sources and research on LuthorCorp ("101 Ways to Make Lex Luthor Squirm")
- Like ILL, Chloe calls on Clark (Superman) to save her when she can't save herself. (thanks, aqgalaxy!)
Anti-Chloe is ILL Anvils
- Maybe Chloe’s healing power – I’m hoping it fizzes out by episode 15.
- Chloe hands Lois her (Chloe’s) research; but given that the research was sent to the copy room, I doubt it’s anything more than general info on LuthorCorp. Hmm, couldn’t Lois do her own research? At least, Lois hands Chloe the research envelope back without ever reading any of it.
Pro-Lois is ILL Anvils
- Nothing that I noticed.
Anti-Lois is ILL Anvils
- Lois is still macking on the boss (during working hours even) and lying about it.
- After vowing to get Lex months ago (“Prototype”), Lois has no sources, nothing – since Chloe is Lois’ "first legitimate source". Duh, what have you been doing, Lois? This also implies that Lois knows that the info she got in "Sneeze" and "Combat" was either not "legitimate" or from her one legitimate source, Chloe.
- Lois’ journalistic nose leads her to ignore Adrian’s repeated phone calls, letters, e-mails, etc. She wasn’t a bit curious? Does the Planet get that many leads on shady Luthor deals that Lois can afford to be choosy?
- This was an opportunity for Lois to realize that macking on the boss is wrong and to break it off. Sadly, Lois had no such epiphany (and, in fact, was ready to take their relationship public after she found out she still had a job at the DP? Huh, how is that a good idea?). Instead Grant (a Luthor) broke it off.
- Lois was basically a puppet (as Lex so helpfully pointed out) throughout the episode. Adrian dictated the story she typed up, Adrian fed her the questions.
- Lois never suspects that Grant may have Luthor connections despite the fact that Lex was in Grant’s office and let her have the "exposé" so easily. At the end of the day, she has no proof, nothing and she loses the "exposé".
- Despite Lex’s assertion that Lois "has an insatiable curiosity. It’s only a matter of time before she connects the dots" in "Blue", Lex is not threatened by Lois at all since he requests that she write the "exposé" and mocks her during the interview.
To recap, Lois is a lying, incompetent, unethical puppet. If she really is ILL, the PTB have royally messed up her backstory/core traits/credibility. Why? Who knows? That’s why I believe we’re heading for a Chlois reveal. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

Lol! Thanks, MonicaOP! :)
As always, I enjoy your blog and your posts.
As always, I must respectfully disagree with some of your points.
Pro-Chloe is ILL Anvils
- Chloe has sources and research on LuthorCorp ("101 Ways to Make Lex Luthor Squirm")
Chloe's been sitting on this research for quite some time now. She also handed it over to Lois in "Gemini". Not very "ILL"-like behavior, in my opinion.
- Like ILL, Chloe calls on Clark (Superman) to save her when she can't save herself. (thanks, aqgalaxy!)
So every female character in the Superman mythos who's called on Superman for help is displaying an "ILL" trait?
Anti-Chloe is ILL Anvils
- Maybe Chloe’s healing power – I’m hoping it fizzes out by episode 15.
"Gemini" demonstrated that Chloe's been honing this power. She also revealed its existence to Jimmy.
It's been an important part of Chloe's character arc this season. Wishful (Chlois) thinking aside, what evidence is there that this power's going to "fizz out" anytime soon? Wishful (Chlois) thinking aside, why would the writers introduce the power simply to have it "fizz out"?
- Chloe hands Lois her (Chloe’s) research; but given that the research was sent to the copy room, I doubt it’s anything more than general info on LuthorCorp.
Until Chloe actually starts writing an expose on Luthorcorp this remains in the same category as hoping her meteor power fizzes out.
Hmm, couldn’t Lois do her own research? At least, Lois hands Chloe the research envelope back without ever reading any of it.
Actually, Lois sent the envelope back to Chloe through interoffice mail with a message alerting Chloe about the bomb.
Pro-Lois is ILL Anvils
- Nothing that I noticed.
LOL.
1. Lois states at the end of "Gemini" that, in light of her experience with Grant/Julian, the guy to whom she ultimately gives her heart won't be a coworker.
Lois: Whoever he is, we sure as hell aren't gonna work together . . .
Ironic foreshadowing along the lines of Clark saying he didn't want a job that involved flying and wearing a suit or Lois herself saying "Kill me first" regarding a career in journalism.
2. Lex purchasing the Planet is a storyline taking directly from the comics. In this storyline, Lex purchased the Planet in order to prevent stories being printed about him. Specifically, Lex was concerned about Lois Lane, yet didn't fire her when he decided to get rid of a lot of other DP reporters.
Anti-Lois is ILL Anvils
- Lois is still macking on the boss (during working hours even) and lying about it.
Actually, she and the boss are macking on each other. The mutual macking also came to an end.
- After vowing to get Lex months ago (“Prototype”), Lois has no sources, nothing – since Chloe is Lois’ "first legitimate source".
And Chloe's been sitting on (supposed) evidence for how long now? Her excuse for not going after Lex at the end of Season 6 was concern for Lana's safety. Well, she still didn't go after Lex when she believed Lana was dead. She hasn't gone after Lex even though she knows that Lana herself has been going after him. But, yeah, you're right the fact that Lois hasn't topppled Luthorcorp yet is definitely a strike against her . . .
Duh, what have you been doing, Lois?
Actually going after Lex Luthor. She's been bringing articles about the Luthors to Grant/Julian which Grant/Julian wasn't publishing. Grant/Julian was, in fact, warning her to stay away from the Luthors, a warning that Lois didn't heed. She confronted Lex about the land purchase near the dam (not imagining that Lana was the "L Luthor" who'd signed off on it).
Meanwhile, Chloe's been, well, helping Clark an awful lot and learning how to control her meteor power. That's got Pulitzer written all over it.
This also implies that Lois knows that the info she got in "Sneeze" and "Combat" was either not "legitimate" or from her one legitimate source, Chloe.
How? In "Combat" Lois put two and two together when she saw the photo in the trash can. In "Sneeze", Lois was the one who nearly got hit by the barn door. Ironically, since Clark's sneeze is what caused the barn door to go flying through the air, the part about it being caused by an alien was, in fact, accurate, unlike Chloe's deliberately false supposition that it was caused by microbursts.
- Lois’ journalistic nose leads her to ignore Adrian’s repeated phone calls, letters, e-mails, etc. She wasn’t a bit curious?
Actually, we don't know how curious she was or wasn't. She seemed to think the guy was a crackpot.
Does the Planet get that many leads on shady Luthor deals that Lois can afford to be choosy?
Apparently not as choosy as Chloe, who's been sitting on her 33.1 story for a loooonnngg time now, not to mention not reporting about all the incidents she's witnessed while helping Clark.
This is also Chloe who,by her own admission, has nonetheless had enough free time since her break-up with Jimmy to create a new identity for Kara.
-Lois never suspects that Grant may have Luthor connections despite the fact that Lex was in Grant’s office and let her have the "exposé" so easily.
On a show where noone's figured out that Clark's got superpowers? (Remember, Chloe found out because Alicia wanted her to) and in a mythos in which Clark Kent fools Lois Lane, Perry White, Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, and everyone else in the world with a pair of non-prescription frames, I think I can forgive Lois for not figuring out the Grant/Julian-Lex Luthor connection.
Chloe hasn't put the connection together either. She's the one who referred to Grant Gabriel as the "boy wonder" from Star City.
At the end of the day, she has no proof, nothing and she loses the "exposé".
And what story was Chloe working on in this episode again?
To recap, Lois is a lying, incompetent, unethical puppet. If she really is ILL, the PTB have royally messed up her backstory/core traits/credibility.
Why? Who knows? That’s why I believe we’re heading for a Chlois reveal. It’s the only thing that makes sense.
And the only way for Chlois to make sense is to believe that the powers that be intend the audience to view Lois as a lying, incompetent, unethical puppet who was nonetheless brought on the show and has been kept on the show since Season 4.
Because, after all, that’s the only thing that makes sense.
It couldn't be that maybe, just maybe, Chloe fans just want a beloved character to have the place traditionally occupied by Lois Lane in the Superman mythos and that Chlarkers just want Chloe and Clark to be together.
Anyway, love the blog and Happy New Year!
As always, I enjoy your blog and your posts.
Thank you! :)
Chloe's been sitting on this research for quite some time now. She also handed it over to Lois in "Gemini". Not very "ILL"-like behavior, in my opinion.
She hasn’t tried to publish any articles on Lex because she probably doesn’t have enough proof. In “Progeny” Lex said as much. To bring Lex, who has infinite resources at his disposal, down, she’d need to make sure the proof is air-tight.
And like I mentioned, the research she gave Lois was probably general stuff since the print room got to see it.
So every female character in the Superman mythos who's called on Superman for help is displaying an "ILL" trait?
Aww, now you’re putting words in my mouth.
The healing power could just be a way to have Chloe experience what Clark’s been experiencing all his life. The fear of being different; of being hauled off to a lab somewhere; of not being accepted. The way I see it, it’s a way to bring them closer. Then it can fizz out because, really, who needs healing power on a show with Superman?
Ironic foreshadowing along the lines of Clark saying he didn't want a job that involved flying and wearing a suit or Lois herself saying "Kill me first" regarding a career in journalism.
Ironic or truth? In Lois' case, I’m guessing it’s the truth.
Lex has yet to show any concern for this Lois Lane. He gave her the "exposé" and mocked her during the interview. He’s not intimidated by her one iota.
Actually, she and the boss are macking on each other. The mutual macking also came to an end.
Oops, my mistake – they’re macking on each other. And, yeah, Grant broke it off while Lois wanted to take their relationship public.
But, yeah, you're right the fact that Lois hasn't topppled Luthorcorp yet is definitely a strike against her . . .
That really has nothing to do with my original point. Lois has no contacts and no sources months after she vowed to take Lex down.
What I saw is Lois gave Lex her lead on that land “story” and came away with nothing. Great bit of investigative journalism.
How? In "Combat" Lois put two and two together when she saw the photo in the trash can.
You mean the picture Chloe threw in the trash can because it was covered in coffee? That picture? And Lois ended up writing an article about how she took Titan down all by herself. What exactly did she figure out?
In "Sneeze", Lois was the one who nearly got hit by the barn door. Ironically, since Clark's sneeze is what caused the barn door to go flying through the air, the part about it being caused by an alien was, in fact, accurate, unlike Chloe's deliberately false supposition that it was caused by microbursts.
Lois’ article was initially about microbursts until the editor put the alien spin on it to sell more papers – so, yeah, the editor’s changes caused it to be more accurate and Lois allowed her article to contain lies (to her) to get her article published.
Actually, we don't know how curious she was or wasn't. She seemed to think the guy was a crackpot.
Exactly. She figured that Adrian was a crackpot and there was no story there. She didn't look into it.
Okaaaay. I don’t see how bringing Chloe into this is a response to the original point.
I think I can forgive Lois for not figuring out the Grant/Julian-Lex Luthor connection.
You can, I can’t.
What exactly was the point of the Grois relationship if Lois learns absolutely nothing from it and faces no consequences as a result of it?
She still doesn’t think that having sex with her boss (the guy that hired her!) is wrong. She sees that she gets preferential treatment but she’s convinced that it has nothing to do with the sex with the boss thing. She was ready to out her relationship with Grant even though she’s aware of what that’ll do to her reputation at the DP. She doesn’t figure out anything strange is going on between Lex and Grant. What exactly was the point of this story arc?
Chloe hasn't put the connection together either. She's the one who referred to Grant Gabriel as the "boy wonder" from Star City.
And Chloe was never as close to Grant as Lois.
And what story was Chloe working on in this episode again?
This doesn’t answer the original point.
And the only way for Chlois to make sense is to believe that the powers that be intend the audience to view Lois as a lying, incompetent, unethical puppet who was nonetheless brought on the show and has been kept on the show since Season 4.
Because, after all, that’s the only thing that makes sense.
Yeah! That’s exactly what I said. The PTB need to give the audience enough hints so that when Chlois happens, no one is shocked. See SV: Decontructing Lois Lane.
Anyway, love the blog and Happy New Year!
Thank you! Happy New Year! Looking forward to many more discussions with you. :)
The power might also grant Chloe with virtual immortality. ("Cure" kind of implied this.) If so, the Clark won't want to worry about out living everyone he knows.
Grant was the one who ended the relationship. The whole point was that you are not supposed to sleep with your boss. Nois learned NOTHING.
Those articles Nois wrote? Many of them had a lot of red. And the article she was going to run about Lionel reappearing after being kidnapped was basically a reprinting of a LuthorCorp press release. And in a recent episode--after Grant was murdered--a screenshot of Nois' email shows that her current editor thinks Nois has sloppy fact checking. So, Grant might have killed stories about the Luthors, but that isn't the only reason he needed to reject her work.
And confronting Lex about the land purchase? Stupid. And I'm not talking about the stupidity of confronting someone and then losing the evidence...which is definitely stupid and a pattern with her. I'm talking about the fact that I was able to deduce that it was Lana based on the "L.L." had feminine handwriting quite easily based only on one clip. (I only saqw the full episode later.) And there's also the fact that Lex's real name is Alexander. So if he used his initials on a contract, it would probably be "A.L."
The fact that Chloe lied and mentioned microbursts is an Iconic Lois Lane trait. She's a secret keeper. Therefore, she needs to make things up to protect Clark's secret. I don't get why you had a problem with that.
Nois is "a lying, incompetent, unethical puppet". And she was forced on AlMiles by a network executive's edict at the very last minute. She was never part of their master plan. Which explains why they write Nois in such as fashion. They need for the audience to know exactly why the character isn't Iconic Lois Lane. And if think Nois was their grand plan, why do they continue using so many Chlois anvils and even far subtler clues that the average viewer won't understand at first glance but that comic book readers will?
And it's interesting that posters on TWOP have mentioned that the newer Superman comics have their portrayals of Lois Lane as more Chloe-like.
Thank you again for all the postage! I really have tried to see EDLois as I.L.L but no such luck she doesn't have it! I don't know if the writers are creative enough to do the Chlois Theory so sadly that leaves me in a bind I say! Stop watching Smallville while the gettings good! With Chloe fired the DP won't be the same and I'm not bothered to watch EDLois get half ass ideas from other people! Sorry Smallville but I won't be TiVoing anymore! Maybe I'll start watchin October Road it has Bryan Greenberg
