The Chlois Theory is the theory that Chloe Sullivan is actually iconic Lois Lane in disguise. In the previous installments I looked at the pro and anti ILL anvils for both Chloe and Lois in:
"Kara"
"Action"
"Wrath"
"Blue"
"Gemini"
This is the breakdown for "Siren":
Pro-Chloe is ILL Anvils
- Chloe’s not afraid to use her skills to help the JL get information to bring Lex down.
- Chloe investigates Black Canary by going through police records. Once again, Chloe shows that she’s got the resources and the ability to search for information.
- It’s from “Gemini” but it was brought up in this episode. Chloe knows Clark best. She figured out something was wrong with Clark.
- Clark depends on Chloe’s investigative skills (very Lois n Clark!) – He asked her to look for Brainiac.
- Clark gets upset when he realized that Oliver put Chloe at risk. He becomes protective and goes all alpha-male on Oliver.
- Clark says that while Lana did come up with info, he’s not going to let Oliver poach the best sidekick in town (so Lois n Clark!).
- Chloe is a bleached blonde.
- Chloe figures out that Dinah is the Black Canary.
Anti-Chloe is ILL Anvils
- Nothing I spotted.
Pro-Lois is ILL Anvils
- Lois is dating a superhero and doesn’t realize it until Black Canary exposes GA’s toys.
- Lois says that not all couples can be as perfect as Clark and Lana. Very ironic considering Clark and Lana don’t end up together. Or... it is very dumb considering Clark and Lana have been having problems for seven years now (and Lois is aware of at least some of the problems).
- Lois tells Clark why settle for hot, rich and famous when she can hang out with Clark. It could be a pro-Lois anvil but Clark, right now, is at the farm. Is Lois suggesting that that’s what she’s comfortable with instead of being with a superhero? Iconic Lois Lane lives for getting at the truth and admires (loves, in Superman’s case) those that want the same.
- Oliver says that Lois will change her mind about him when “the Earth cracks open and time ticks backwards”. Hasn’t time already gone backwards in “Reckoning”?
Anti-Lois is ILL Anvils
- It seems like Lois’ reputation for not doing fact checking is well-known. Fact checking is what separates the tabloid writers from the real DP reporters.
- Lois really and truly fell in love with Oliver Queen. She even used Grant (and was willing to risk her career and reputation for) to try to forget Ollie but in the end she couldn’t forget the man she had "spooned beneath the sheets with". Furthermore she admits that she can’t hack being the girlfriend of a superhero. After her experiences growing up with the General, she can’t deal with coming in second in her love interest’s life.
Just how is she going to handle being with Superman/Clark Kent? She isn’t a teenager who might outgrow childish hang-ups. She is an adult who’s aware of what she wants and doesn’t want in a relationship. Quite a contrast with the Clark and Lois talk in "Aqua" where Lois (referring to AC) says that she’s met men who want to take over the world but not many who want to save it.
Conclusion, just like “Gemini” showed (for the hundredth, thousandth, millionth, billionth time) why Clark and Lana won’t work; this episode showed why Clark and Lois won’t work either. Clark would have to be a real jerk to pursue a relationship with Lois after she spilled her guts to him about her inability to be with a superhero.

I completely agree! "Siren" was such a great Chlois episode. It had a lot of anvils, like you mentioned. Plus, with Clark getting really upset over Oliver putting Chloe in danger was sooo Lois and Clark.
And when he told her she was the best sidekick in town. It just confirmed that no one can replace her. Also, she's not a real blonde! That's HUGE!
"Siren" was great because of the Chlois anvils. I especially enjoyed Clark's reaction to finding out Chloe isn't a natural blonde.
Thanks for commenting, ashley! :)
No problem:)
I love Chlois! And your dueling anvils posts!
I agree Siren was such a good Chlois episode with Chloe admitting that she is not a natural blonde. I don't think that EDLois is the real Lois Lane! I'm sorry she just doesn't have it! The truth hurts! The Chlois theory would be a real challenge for the writers but they have been building it up! Hopefully they'll be up to the challenge if not sucks to be them but I have always though highly of Alfred Gough & Miles Millar so hopefully putting my faith in them will be enough!
I believe that the writers have been building up to Chlois since the Pilot. I hope they have the guts to see it through.
Thanks for the comment! :)
They series has definitely been building up to Chlois since the pilot. And the writers didn't stop dropping the Chlois anvils even after Nois appeared. So that tells you something.
Anyway, I think it's very interesting that Chloe being a bleached blonde was mentioned NOW. The last time she was refered to as bleached blonde was in "Convenant", the season finale for the third season. An FBI agent working for Lionel called her a "bleach-blonde Pulitzer wannabe".
Since the inclusion of Nois was due to an edict by a network executive, I believe that the mention in "Covenant" was supposed to be a Chlois anvil that they were going to pay off in the the fourth season. (I read somewhere that AlMiles originally viewed the series as going on for four or five years. Multiple renewals screwed with this and Chlois.)
I'm so disappointed after watching the series finale. After all the clues and all the build-up. No Chlois. How could I have been so wrong?
