SV: The Chlois Theory and the Case of the Dueling Anvils (Part 7)

The Chlois Theory is the theory that Chloe Sullivan is actually iconic Lois Lane in disguise. In the previous installments I looked at the pro and anti ILL anvils for both Chloe and Lois in:

"Kara"
"Action"
"Wrath"
"Blue"
"Gemini"
"Siren"

Here is the breakdown for "Veritas":

Pro-Chloe is ILL Anvils

  • Chloe knows how to investigate and obtain information from contacts. She gets password clearance from the Department of Water and Power and is able to track Brainiac’s most recent location.

  • When Kara suggests she take to the sky while Clark searches for Brainiac by land, Clark tells her it’s futile because Chloe’s been searching for Brainiac and hasn’t been able to track him. This little exchange illustrates how much Clark believes in Chloe’s abilities and how much he trusts her smarts.

  • When talking with Lionel, Chloe speaks in the plural “we” meaning Clark and her. They’re of the same mind.

  • Chloe tells Clark that she’ll wait for him (at the hospital). This reminds me of her letter in "Fever" where she says that Clark’s "worth the wait".

  • Chloe rushes in just as Clark breaks down and cries. I believe she had a feeling that he needed someone at that moment. That’s how in tune to each other they are.

Anti-Chloe is ILL Anvils
  • Nothing I spotted.

Pro-Lois is ILL Anvils

  • Jimmy suggests they give Lex the double whammy - Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen in their big debut.

  • Lois (and Jimmy) goes undercover to "interview" (read: hurl accusations at) Lionel.

  • Lois (and Jimmy) gets phone records showing Lionel was in touch with Patricia Swann.

  • Lois (and Jimmy) trails Lionel to Isis and find Lionel’s conveniently placed urgent letter to Lana.

Anti-Lois is ILL Anvils

  • Lois looks at her blank screen with the headline "BIG COOL HEADLINE HERE by Lois Lane". To quote Elly’s (at TWoP) 12-year-old daughter – pathetic. Lois has nothing until an e-mail from an anonymous person tells her about Patricia Swann’s death. Would she have spent the day staring at the blank monitor if the e-mail hadn’t landed in her inbox?

  • Lois is all about the headline and the glory of seeing her name in print. She starts with the best part first and works backwards. Again, huh?

  • Lois comes up with the headline for Patricia Swann’s murder but The Planet already has an article about the murder on the front page. Was she scooped? Does she read the paper?

  • Jumping to conclusions without a shred of proof, Lois (and Jimmy) assumes that Lionel had Patricia Swann murdered.

  • Lionel wonders whether the "dynamic duo" have "boundless courage or incorrigible stupidity". Lois replies "potayto, potahto". Someone who equates courage and stupidity probably is more stupid than courageous. A courageous person goes into a situation weighing the risks involved and taking necessary precautions. A stupid person runs blindly into situations, jumps to conclusions, gives no thought to consequences and usually needs to be bailed out (see "Phantom"). Big difference. At least Jimmy had enough sense to doubt their actions.

  • Lois shows all her cards to Lionel (like she’s done with Lex) and gets escorted out without getting any new information.

Lois’ m.o. is to bumble and stumble into things. Or, my favorite, she gets things handed to her - a place to stay /jobs/a chance at Met U/information /etc. It does nothing to convince me she’s anything but lucky. What’ll happen when her dumb luck runs out and Chloe isn’t there to bail her out? Methinks it’ll be the end of the line for Penelois.

Great post! I'm glad u did one for this episode because there were quite a few.
I also thought about the fever letter when Chloe said that. There really wasn't any need for that line(from an audience pov). They could have Clark just walk into the room and Chloe watch him leave. They stuck it in there for a reason, imo.

Lois..it seems like she's only there to be funny. That 'potato' line really bugged me. Her way of 'getting the story' is basically just wait until someone hands her the info or send it via email.

I really hope the writers bring back the "Fever" letter in some way.

As for Lois, I hate the way she bumbles into things. She hasn't got a clue as to what writing for the DP really entails.

Thanks for the feedback, ashley! :)

It's no wonder Chloe gets fired in the next episode.

She spends more time playing sidekick to Clark than being an actual reporter.

ILL isn't suppose to know Clark's secret at this stage of his life. Nor is she the type who would reduce herself as anyone's sidekick.

Like THLois once said:

"You are not working with me, you are working for me."

>> Chloe gets fired in the next episode because that's part of Lex's Plan B (see "Progeny").

The audience sees Chloe helping Clark - that doesn't mean she's not also doing her work at the DP. If the articles she's researching for the DP don't have anything to do with Clark's story, there is no reason to show them on Smallville.

ILL isn't suppose to know Clark's secret at this stage of his life.
>> ILL didn't live with the Kents in SV. ILL didn't work with Martha and Jon. ILL didn't get kicked out of school for drinking. ILL never lied for a tabloid. ILL didn't get hired at the DP for talking about UFOs or bang the boss who hired her.

And Lois would have to be brain-dead not to recognize Clark when he dons the Superman suit seeing as she's seen him without the disguise (i.e. glasses) for the last 4 years.

Nor is she the type who would reduce herself as anyone's sidekick.
>> While both Chloe and Clark have referred to Chloe as Clark's "sidekick", it's meant as a compliment not the derogatory term you suggest. In fact, if you look at their relationship since the Pilot, they are partners who have each other's back just like iconic LnC.
