I really liked this episode. I like that Blair’s little secret came out and that real consequences were felt. Nate once again grew a backbone but the reactions of the school were a little old-fashioned. Serena got on my nerves in this episode.
GG asks what's the difference between gossip and scandal. Anyone can make a minor indiscretion and generate a day’s worth of buzz but a scandal requires the right person to be in the wrong place.
Serena is in a pharmacy nonchalantly picking up every pregnancy test available off the store shelves. A nosey
The pic makes it to the Humphrey household where Jenny, not so subtly, screams. This brings Dan and Rufus running to see what’s wrong. Jenny lamely explains that she was just testing her screaming (what?). Thankfully, the Humphrey boys don’t fall for that line and promptly displace Jenny to check her laptop. Upon seeing the pic of Serena with a pregnancy test, Rufus asks Jenny to leave.
Eric gets a message on his phone and asks Serena if there’s something she wants to share with him. She jokes about his hair color until he shows her the pic.
At the Humphrey home, the boys are getting ready for the talk. Dan looks justifiably uncomfortable as Rufus just stares at him. Dan begs him to say something. Rufus says that Alison and he have always known that Dan was special and that they’d do whatever was necessary for Dan to have a bright future. But that future did not include becoming a teenage father. Dan replies that that was not a part of his plans either but he’ll be there for Serena because he loves her. Rufus ignores Dan’s declaration of love for Serena and urges Dan to go see her.
Dan spots Serena at the school. She starts to tell him that she’s been trying to reach him when he cuts her off. He tells her that he’s sorry she didn’t feel she could talk to him but that’s he’s there for her no matter what she decides because he loves her. Why in heck did she let him get that far in his little speech? Ironically, later Dan tells her that he loves that she interrupts him but when it’s really needed, she doesn’t interrupt. I know minor quibble.
Blair and her posse are sitting on the steps at the school when Jenny sits beside Blair. Blair tells Jenny that she’s late. Jenny replies that she had some books to drop off at the library. Blair asks Jenny to move down a couple of steps. Blair is one piece of work. Why Jenny wants to hang out that crowd is beyond me. Jenny moves but tells “B” that the whole hazing thing is getting old. Blair says that the hazing stops when she says and adds that only her friends get to call her “B”. Nice, “B”. Jenny leaves. Go, Jenny!
Serena approaches. The girls look expectantly (sorry, couldn’t resist) at her. She tells them that she’s not pregnant and asks to speak to Blair. Blair pretends that the pregnancy test was not for her. Serena observes that whenever something happens that Blair doesn’t like, Blair pretends that it doesn’t exist. Serena hands the pregnancy test to Blair… in front of her friends and the school? What is wrong with Serena? Blair is obviously in denial and scared and Serena is acting thoughtlessly. Serena tells Blair to take the test to find out if she (Blair) and Chuck are going to have a baby. Shut-up, Serena!
Chuck looks on as Blair and Nate kiss. Nate asks Blair to come with him when he visits his father. Blair is pleased that Nate is leaning on her. Blair spots Chuck; the music turns ominous.
As Jenny and Dan walk into the house, Jenny is lamenting the fact that she spent six months trying to be friends with someone that’s never going to like her. Duh. Rufus meets them at the door. Dan quickly tells him that he’s not going to be a grandfather. Rufus does the dance of joy. Well, not really but it’s the most emotion he’s ever shown. Dan adds that he told Serena that he loved her but she thought he said it because he thought she was pregnant. Rufus says that that’s a good thing. He encourages Dan to take a step back and enjoy being seventeen.
Jenny gives Dan her two cents about admitting his love for Serena. She dismisses Rufus’ advice (he’s old and alone) and urges Dan to tell Serena again in a more romantic setting. Dan agrees.
Serena goes to see Blair to nag her once again about the pregnancy test. Serena, let it go! Blair tells Serena that she’s not pregnant. Hmm, isn’t that what Serena wanted to hear – that Blair took the test? Serena leaves in a huff.
Humphrey house, romantic dinner between Serena and Dan: Jenny comes in to get some juice. Dan asks Jenny to drink her juice at Vanessa’s. Jenny replies that she’ll stay in her room with the door closed and her headphones on. Serena is obviously distracted so Dan asks her to share what’s on her mind with him so that they can both worry together. Really sweet. Serena explains that the test was for Blair. Dan says that she just got back together with Nate. Serena says that it wasn’t Nate, it was Chuck. Jenny listens in. Dan says that Chuck deserves to know. I agree – but it’s up to Blair to talk to him. Serena thinks that Chuck may be able to talk Blair into taking the test. Oh, for… Blair told Serena that she wasn’t pregnant. Why is Serena still pursuing this?
At Rufus’ gallery, a pretty woman hits on Rufus who is completely oblivious to her hints. She gives him her card and leaves when Bex comes in. Bex asks if there are any new pieces since the last time she was there. Rufus shows her some art. She asks about his wife. Rufus says that he’s trying to move on. Bex asks him out for the following night. Rufus accepts.
Serena goes to the Bass’ apartment to talk to Chuck. Chuck assures her that he’s won’t tell Nate about their (Blair and his) little fling. Serena tells him that the pregnancy test was for Blair. Chuck says that they had protection and, if Blair is pregnant, it’s not his. Serena insists that it’s Chuck’s child. Shut up, Serena! Chuck tells Serena that Blair and Nate slept together. He suggests that she talk to Nate. I suggest that she stay out of it. Serena is wearing the same dress as on her date with Dan. She left the date to go talk to Chuck? Btw, I love Serena's dress.
Rufus tries to figure out how Dan feels about his dad dating again. Dan quips that Rufus should not wear the shirt he has on for his date. Jenny comes in and is disgusted by the shirt – but is okay with her dad going out for drinks.
Serena goes to see Blair and unsubtly brings up the pregnancy test... yet again. Serena is hurt that Blair didn’t tell her about her and Nate. Shut up, Serena! Serena explains that Chuck told her about Blair and Nate when she went to talk to him about Blair. Blair says that Serena had no right to do that. Yes! Serena replies that she’s trying to help. Serena whines (as only Serena can) that she took a bullet for Blair. The whole school thought that she was pregnant. Well, Serena, you were stupid enough not to check that no one was watching you grab all the pregnancy tests off the shelf. Eleanor asks what’s going on. Serena says that she should ask Blair. Are you sure, Serena? You seem intent on telling the world.
Eleanor asks Blair if she’s okay. Eleanor is worried that Blair’s bulimia has returned. Eleanor says that she heard Blair in the bathroom. Blair says that she’s stressed. Eleanor suggests that Blair visit her father in Leon.
Blair takes the pregnancy test and calls Serena. She apologizes for the GG rumors, not telling her about Nate and tells her that she’s not pregnant. Shut up, Blair! The way Serena reacts you’d think she had the pregnancy scare. Whatever.
At the school, Blair comes across Chuck. She tells him that she’s not pregnant. He goes to touch her and she stops him. She tells him that it’s game over and leaves. Chuck looks pissed. He sends a message to Gossip Girl - “GG: S not pregnant, covering for Blair. Same Blair whose sheets were rumpled by two guys in one week.”
Dan sets up a picnic for Serena. He’s obviously flustered. Serena’s lit paper flies away and Serena runs after it. A random guy catches the pages and Serena blurts out that she loves him. So much for that.
News about Blair’s indiscretion reaches everyone at once. The comments range from nasty to mean. Blair goes to find Nate. Jenny comes up to Nate. She says that she saw the message from GG. Nate doesn’t believe it’s true. Jenny agrees. Nate asks Jenny for the truth, as Blair’s friend. Jenny replies that Blair was never her friend and outs Blair.
Nate tackles Chuck onto the hood of his limo. He angrily asks if Chuck slept with Blair. Chuck asks Nate to take his hands off his neck. Chuck replies that he took what Blair kept offering him (Nate) and Nate kept refusing. Nate asks how Chuck being with Blair is his fault. Chuck says that Blair needed someone and he was there. Nate tells Chuck to stay away from him. Go, Nate! Hmm, another Chuck plan that backfires in his face.
Blair is at Nate’s when he gets home. He’s not happy to see her. Blair wants to talk about their relationship. Nate makes it clear that they no longer have a relationship. Nate says that all this time he’s felt guilty about what he’d done and when Blair said she wanted to leave the past in the past, he didn’t realize it was her past she was talking about. Yay, Nate! Maybe you’re not that much like SV’s Clark after all. Blair attempts to make Nate believe that Chuck is lying. Nate responds that Chuck might, but Jenny wouldn’t. He tells Blair in no uncertain terms that they are through.
[Smallville Rant Warning. Let’s compare Nate’s reaction to Clark’s when he found out Lana was seeing/sleeping with his former friend (Lex). Clark blamed himself and was ready to propose to a pregnant Lana on her wedding day. And this isn’t some random soap opera guy, this is the future Superman acting like a spineless, pathetic idiot. Okay, rant over.]
At the gallery, Bren, the girl that was interested in Rufus, comes in. She tells him that she’s there on a dare to ask him out. Rufus says that he’s busy tonight but maybe another night. Just then Bex comes in. Rufus, flustered, introduces them backwards. Bex is upset. She suggests they reschedule the drinks. Rufus starts to object but Bex interrupts. She leaves. Bren observes that Rufus is available after all. Okay, I don’t get why Bex became all pissy. Did she have dibs on Rufus?
Serena goes to see Blair. Blair accused Serena of telling Jenny about her (Blair) and Chuck. She says that because of Jenny, everyone knows the intimate details of her life and Nate is not speaking to her. Er, Blair, Nate’s not speaking to you because you had sex with Chuck. Serena assures Blair that she didn’t tell Jenny. Blair asks if Serena told Dan, her low-rent boyfriend, who told his social climbing sister who wears Blair’s hand-me-downs and she blabbed to Nate. Oh, good grief, Blair, you screwed up and you got found out. It’s your own fault!
Serena whines that Blair is attacking Dan and Jenny but admits to having confided to Dan about Blair and Chuck. She’s not more upset that Blair called Dan a “low rent boyfriend”? Blair says that the rules are different for the Serena van der Woodsens than for the Waldorfs. Serena replies that Blair obviously doesn’t need her and her low rent taste and leaves.
At the school, Jenny meets up with Blair’s posse. Blair comes up to her and asks what she’s doing here. Jenny is about to leave when one of Blair’s friends asks her to stay. The friend tells Blair that she is in no position to tell anyone where they can and can’t it. Blair asks if she knows who she’s talking to. Another friend replies that Blair is a self-righteous bitch who sat on her own high horse judging everyone else. Now that’s harsh – true, but harsh. The girls inform Blair that they know about Nate and Chuck. They leave. As Jenny is about to go, Blair says that while she may never forgive Jenny to going to Nate, she will ruin her if she leaves now. Jenny asks how and leaves.
Time out. What century are we in - the sixteenth? If it had been a guy, say... Nate that had slept with two girls in one week, the guys would be high-fiving each other. But because Blair, a girl, did it it's ruined her reputation and made her a social outcast?! What??
At the gallery, Rufus calls Bex once again to apologize.
Serena confronts Dan about telling Jenny about Blair and Chuck. Dan denies telling Jenny anything. When she asks why she should believe him, he answers that it’s because he gave his word and he loves her. She looks stunned. Dan leaves, hurt by her reaction.
Serena goes to talk to Eric about her problems. Eric asks why she thinks that Dan is lying. She replies that he’s the only one she told. Eric, wisely, suggests that Jenny probably listened in on her conversation with Dan. Eric says that Serena’s reaction to being told that Dan loves her is normal given their experience with their mother’s relationships. Serena ends the conversation because Eric is coming dangerously close to being smarter than her. I don’t think he’s close at all. I think he’s past her.
Blair sits next to Chuck at a bar. She says that she came to congratulate him in person. He ruined her relationships with Nate, Serena, her friends, and Jenny. She has no one to turn to but him. Chuck replies that she doesn’t even have him. He’s really cruel with her. He says that she held a sort of facintation when she was beautiful, delicate and untouched but now she like one of the Arabians his father owned – rode hard and put away wet. Ouch. He adds that he doesn’t want her and doesn’t see why anyone else would. Blair leaves the bar crushed.
Blair comes home and begs her mother to let her spend the rest of the semester in France (with her father). Eleanor agrees – but doesn’t ask Blair what’s wrong?!
At the school, Blair’s ex friends make plans but Jenny says she can’t come because she has to return books to the library. One of the girls volunteers Elise to take Jenny’s books. Looks like Jenny’s been accepted and Elise is the new gopher. Jenny is not too sure of her new status; she waves at Elise.
Bex comes into the gallery to see Rufus. She says that she had to stop by after all of Rufus’ pitiful messages. Rufus apologizes again. Bex lays down the law. Thankfully, Rufus doesn’t take her seriously and does what he wants.
Serena asks Dan why he loves her. He says that he likes it when she interrupts him; she makes no apologies for being who she is - beautiful, smart, sexy; she’s completely unaware of her effect on him; she laughs like a four year old and she’s never given up on Blair. Oops. Serena says tells Dan that she loves him but she has to leave.
At the airport, Blair is getting ready to leave when Serena comes up in a taxi. Serena convinces Blair not let a scandal make her run away. Serena urges her to stay and fight; and Serena promises to be there with her. Blair decides to stay. They hug.
GG asks who will go down next... everyone if Blair has anything to say about it. Uh oh.
