SN: 3-9 "Malleus Maleficarum" Review
This episode was downright creepy. But I loved it. It’s getting really ambiguous who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. I felt sorry for Ruby and Elisabeth. Welcome back, Supernatual!
A couple enters their home. The wife about a "terrible, terrible party". The husband has other things on his mind. They kiss. The wife excuses herself and heads to the bathroom. Bathroom breaks never end well on Supernatural. Cut to a woman reciting a chant as she unwraps... a toothbrush! The wife meanwhile brushes her teeth. Does the chanting woman have the wife’s used toothbrush? Ewwww, gross! The chanting woman cuts her hand with a knife; her blood runs onto the toothbrush. In the bathroom, the wife stops brushing. She puts her hand in her mouth and pulls out a tooth. Ew. She does it again and again until she’s choking on loose teeth and blood. She starts to panic; her husband, hearing her cries, tries to get into the bathroom. The door locks. The husband continues to bang on the door until the door unlocks and opens... His wife is lying on the floor dead.
Later the husband, obviously in shock, says that he couldn’t do anything to stop it. He adds that the police and medical examiner can’t explain what happened. Dean, dressed in a fine suit, pretends to take notes. The husband asks if they are from the Center for Disease Control did his wife die of a virus. Sam is looking around the bathroom. Sam finds a bag under the sink as Dean asks the husband if anyone had a grudge against his wife. The husband replies that everyone loved Janet. Sam comes out of the bathroom and they leave.
The bag Sam found is a hex bag. Dean is disgusted. Inside the bag are bird bones, rabbit teeth in a cloth torn from something Janet owned. Dean surmises that they are dealing with a witch. Sam agrees. He says that is old world black magic. They get into the Impala. Dean states that he hates witches. Me too. Sam says that the witch could be a man, woman, coworker, anyone. Sam believes that it wasn’t random and someone Janet knew had an axe to grind.
Amanda comes out of her SUV carrying a bag of groceries. Her neighbor (Elisabeth) asks if she’s okay as she didn’t make it to the book club. Amanda says that she’s very busy but fine. Amanda drops the groceries on the counter (ooh, she’s wearing Lana Lang’s coat!), opens the oven to take out a dish covered in flies, maggots, worms. Ewwwwwww!
Janet’s husband sits in his car listening to his radio eating a hamburger. I love the music! Amanda takes a knife and starts chanting. She puts Paul’s watch on the dish. She says that the dinner was cooked for Paul and now he’s going to eat it. She stabs the meat. In the car, the radio changes stations. Aw, too bad, I was enjoying that song. Paul takes a bite of his sandwich. He looks down to see maggots and stuff coming out of his sandwich. He chokes and gets out of the car. The Impala rushes to the scene. Dean says to check the car as he stays with Paul. Sam finds another hex bag in the car. He torches the bag; Paul stops choking; Amanda’s dish bursts into flame.
Paul wants to know what happened. Dean explains that someone murdered his wife and now tried to kill him. He demands to know who could want Paul dead. Paul says that he had an affair with a woman who turned out to be unbalanced. He put an end to the affair a week ago. Jerk.
Amanda is frantically looking through her hex books. She stops. Her wrist suddenly has a large gash on it, then two more. The other wrist starts bleeding. She falls down dead.
Sam and Dean sneak into Amanda’s house holding guns. They come across Amanda’s body and her hex paraphernalia. Dean turns around and comes face to body (?) with a dead rabbit hanging from the ceiling. That scare sends him on a rant. He observes that Paul really knows how to pick them. It’s like Fatal Attraction all over again. Hee, just what I was thinking. Dean angrily asks why a rabbit always gets screwed in the deal. Aw, he feels sorry for the rabbit. Is that really Dean?
Sam asks why Amanda would commit suicide if she was hell bent on revenge. Dean thinks it’s a spurned lovers’ hat trick (ha, a hockey reference!). Sam is doubtful. He looks under the glass table (huh?) and comes up with another hex bag. Dean wonders why witches are killing each other. Sam thinks they’ve got a coven on their hands.
The book club is meeting at Ron’s house. Ron is not fooled. He believes that the "book club" deals in dishing gossip. Elisabeth comes in as Ron leaves. Elisabeth is surprised that Ron doesn’t know about Amanda. She wants to know if they are going to pretend that Amanda is dead. Tammy meanwhile is taking out the hex paraphernalia. Cold Bitch (CB, if she has a name I didn’t catch it) says that while they loved Amanda, she was unstable and probably killed Janet. Elisabeth says that they have to stop. Xxx tells her to take a deep breath. Amanda insists saying that people are dying. CB tells her to think about what book club has gotten them – her husband’s promotion, a trip to Hawaii, CB home pottery business. Amanda reconsiders. They turn off the lights, hold hands and start chanting.
The next day, Elisabeth is tending her garden when Detective Bachman (Sam) and Detective Turner (Dean) walk over to talk to her. Ha – BTO (Bachman-Turner Overdrive) reference. Cool. Sam says that they are following up on Amanda’s death. Elisabeth says that she killed herself. Sam replies maybe. Dean asks if Elisabeth was aware of Amanda’s practices. Sam adds that Amanda’s house was littered with satanic paraphernalia. Dean adds a regular Black Sabbath (ha, another band reference!). Elisabeth says that Amanda was an Episcopalian. Dean replies that Amanda was using the wrong bible. Just then, Tammy and CB come up. CB says that Elisabeth is a little upset. Dean asks her name. CB snottily replies that it’s Mrs. Renée Van Allen. Renée says that Amanda’s death has been hard on everyone. Tammy adds that you think you know someone. Dean replies that they all have secrets. Sam says they’ll be in touch and they leave.
In the Impala, Dean is sure that Elisabeth is involved. He cites her green thumb – growing mandrake, belladonna, wolfs bane herbs out of season. He, when did Dean become a plant expert? In A Very Supernatural Christmas he was making fun of Sam for knowing what meadowsweet was. Sam notes that Elisabeth’s definitely had a good run as he goes through news articles. It seems that Elisabeth has gone up a few tax brackets and Renée’s had a run of good luck as well. Dean speculates that they met the coven minus one member. Dean wonders whether to thank them or not for killing the "nut job" (Amanda). Sam replies that the others are into black magic and need to be stopped. Dean, surprised, asked if Sam means stopped like stopped (heh). He reminds Sam that they’re human. Sam notes that they’re also murderers. Dean replies burn, witch, burn.
The Impala comes to sudden stop... right in front of Ruby. Ruby warns Sam to get out of town. Dean points a gun at Ruby. Ruby begs Sam to get in the car and not look back. Dean says that they can handle a few witches. Ruby calls Dean a jackass and informs him that she’s not talking about witches; she’s talking about who they serve. Sam replies demons. Ruby says that there’s a demon in town that knows about and will come after Sam and it is way more than he can handle. Dean doesn’t believe any of it. He calls Ruby a bitch and insists that she lying just like all demons. Ruby asks why Dean is part of the conversation. Dean replies that Sam is his brother. Ruby ripostes that that’s why he’s checking out in a few months and leaving Sam alone. Ruby says that Dean should let her save him since Dean won’t be around to do it anymore. Dean fires the gun just as Sam pushes his arm upward. Ruby’s disappears.
At the hotel, Dean wonders what Sam was thinking. He says that demons want them dead and they want them dead. Sam reminds him of Casey. Dean replies that Casey wasn’t stringing him like a fish on a hook. Sam says that realizes that Ruby is dangerous but she is useful. Dean insists that they kill Ruby before she kills them. Sam says that if Ruby wanted them dead, she’d stop saving them.
Sam thinks that they should look at the big picture and start thinking in strategies and moves ahead. He says they’re not just hunting anymore, they are at war. What is this bizarre hotel room décor? Dean asks if Sam feels okay. Dean says that he’s taking advice from a demon and appears less bothered about offing people. Dean looks uncomfortable. Sam asks if Dean is mad because he (Sam) is starting to agree with him. Dean says that he’s mad because Sam is not acting like himself. Sam agrees. He says that Dean is leaving and if he’s going to fight this war after Dean’s gone he has to change. He has to be more like Dean. Aw. Dean looks increasingly uncomfortable. He struggles to say that he feels like there are a bunch of knives inside him. Dean thinks that it’s the coven. Sam runs around looking for the hex bag as Dean starts spitting out blood. Dean is on his hands and knees as Sam takes apart the beds. Er, why would Sam think that the hex bag is inside the mattress? Can the coven stash these bags without tearing the mattress? Sam takes a gun and rushes out of the room. Dean is still spitting out blood.
At the book club, the coven hold hands while chanting. Sam bursts in. He demands that they let Dean go.
Back at the hotel room, Dean is still choking. Ruby kicks open the door of the room. Dean quips that she get in line if she wants to kill him. Ruby grabs Dean and pushes on the bed. She squirts some really nasty looking stuff in his mouth. She says to stop calling her bitch.
At Renée’s house, Renée and Elisabeth try to convince Sam that they have nothing to do with what’s happening to Dean. Sam issues an ultimatum – stop the spell or die. Elisabeth explains that they were getting Renée a lower mortgage rate. Sam looks confused.
At the hotel, Ruby warns Dean that the next time he points the gun at her, she won’t just disappear. She throws the gun to him. Dean is surprised that she saved his life.
Meanwhile, Sam eliminates Elisabeth and Renée as the ones targeting Dean. Very clever deduction, Sam. He realizes that while Elisabeth and Renée have both had runs of good fortune, Tammy has not. Tammy looks terrified. Sam asks if she didn’t want something for herself or she’s already getting these women’s souls. Tammy’s eyes turn black. She calls Sam Magnum (hee). Sam demands that she. Let. His brother. Go. Tammy replies that Dean’s lung should be on the floor now. Sam pulls the trigger but Tammy stops the bullet! The bullet falls to the floor. Elisabeth and Renée are stunned.
Sam is tossed to the wall. Renée asks Tammy what’s she’s doing. Tammy tells her to shut her painted hole. Renée is outraged. She starts to give Tammy shit until Tammy flicks her wrist and Tammy’s neck is broken. Elisabeth screams. So do I. Sam pleads for Tammy to let Elisabeth go. Tammy tells him to wait his turn. She tries to calm Elisabeth down. Elisabeth accuses her of killing Renée. Eh, Renée had it coming. Tammy admits that she killed Renée, Amanda... that’s what happens to witches that get voted off the island. Elisabeth asks who she is. Tammy explains that Elisabeth swore alliance to the demon. Tammy adds Elisabeth’s her soul is now hers. Elisabeth is in tears. She denies knowing that they were dealing in satanic rituals. Hmm, why is this powerful demon bothering with these Martha Stewart wannabes? It doesn’t make sense. If that's the demons' plan, maybe Sam and Dean have nothing to worry about after all. Just saying'.
Tammy directs to Sam. She tells him that she and her friends have been looking for Sam. Sam guesses that it’s so he can lead some piss-poor demon army. Tammy says no. Sam’s not their messiah. Tammy tells Sam about a new leader, a real leader, that’s going to tear the world apart. She adds that the demon doesn’t want Sam around. She raises her hand and Sam is pressed slowly into the wall behind him.
The door bursts open. Dean rushes in with the gun cocked only to be thrown over the couch. He is pinned to the wall like Sam. The demon is happy she has a two-for-one. Ruby comes in. She tells Tammy that she just wants to talk. Ruby approaches as she tells Tammy that she’s been lost without her. She wants Tammy to take her back. She says that why she led the Winchesters to Tammy. Dean mouths "told you so" to Sam. Oh, come on Dean, she just saved you. Ruby wants to serve Tammy again. Ruby tries to stab Tammy but Tammy stops her. The knife falls to the floor. They trade punches until Ruby is knocked down. Tammy picks up a poker and glares at Elisabeth.
Tammy goes towards Ruby. She can’t believe that Ruby aligned herself with Abbott and Costello. Hee. Tammy hits Ruby across the face with the poker. Elisabeth runs to the altar. Tammy picks Ruby up. She takes time explaining to Sam and Dean that Ruby was one of hers. Ruby was a witch when she was human. She taunts Ruby. She starts a chant and the demon starts to be excised out of Ruby. Suddenly, Tammy stops and coughs.
Elisabeth is chanting at the altar. The exorcism stops and Sam and Dean are released. Tammy coughs up blood. She makes a fist and Elisabeth falls down dead. Hopefully, Elisabeth’s last act saved her from demon-hood. Dean comes up behind Tammy and stabs her over and over. Tammy falls to the floor dead. Ruby tells them to go; she’ll clean up the mess. Ruby retrieves her knife.
Dean walks outside the Conquistador Motel (ha, that explains the décor). The lights start flickering. Dean looks around. Ruby stands in front of him. Dean asks if Ruby was once human, died, went to hell and became a demon. Ruby agrees. Dean asks how long ago. Ruby replies back when the plague was big. Dean asks if all demons were once human. Ruby replies that all the demons she’s knows were human once. She says that most forgot they were once human or what being human is like. Ruby says that Dean can’t imagine the agonies. Dean quips that he saw Hell Raiser; he gets the gist. Ruby says that Hell Raiser comes pretty close except for all the leather. She tells Dean that that’s what will happen to him. Hell will burn off his humanity – he can count on it. Dean realizes that there’s no way of saving him from the pit. Ruby says there isn’t. Deans asks why Ruby told Sam she could. Ruby replies so that Sam would talk to her. Dean asks why she’s telling him this. She replies that she needs Dean’s help to get Sam ready for life without him; to fight the war on his own. Dean asks why she wants them to win. Ruby says that she’s not like the other demons; she remembers what it’s like to be human. Dean looks pretty freaked out.
Okay – so let me get this straight. If Dean can’t be saved, Dean will become a demon like Ruby, Tammy, the yellow-eyed demon, his dad... His humanity will be stripped from him; unless he ends up a benevolent demon, like Ruby. One scenario is he ends up fighting alongside Sam (a human) against the demons. But, Sam appears to be getting darker; losing his humanity. So... another scenario is that human-but-evil-Sam fights against demon-but-good-Dean. I really hate this scenario. In fact, I hate all scenarios that have Dean become a demon.
