SN: 3-5 “Bedtime Stories” Review
I really liked this episode. It wasn’t too angsty. The references to fairytales were fun, the reenactments were gross and any mention of Sixth Sense, one of my favorite movies (Bruce Willis!), is a plus in my book.
Maple Springs, New York: It’s dark, three guys (they're actually brothers) are walking to a construction site. A strange animal-type sound can be heard. Bearded guy (Kyle) asks what the noise is. Tall guy snarks it’s a dog. Kyle’s not convinced. They discuss the construction as more strange noises are heard. Kyle walks over to check out the noise. He sees nothing. As he heads back, short guy walks away. He walks behind a pile of pipes and is dragged away screaming. It sounds like an animal’s got him. Eww.
Tall guy is attacked. Blood spurts out on the construction plans. Kyle runs away and hides until the noises die down. He looks out to see one guy lying bloody on the ground. Suddenly there is noise in front of him. He looks terrified and screams.
Cut to toad in the road. The Impala just misses it. Sam tries to understand why Dean doesn’t want to take the Colt and face the crossroads demon. Sam wants to summon the demon and force her to take the deal away. Dean angrily argues that they don’t know that that’ll work (see pic). Sam replies that they’ll just shoot her then. Dean says that Sam’s plans are iffy at best and if they screw it up Sam will die. Sam counters that if they don’t do anything Dean will die.
Dean changes the subject and asks about the latest job. Sam lets it go… for now. Sam says that there is a psychotic killer who rips victims apart with brute ferocity. Sam and Dean speculate that it’s a werewolf which gives them two days to track it before it changes back.
Hospital: Sam and Dean introduce themselves to Kyle as Detectives Page and Plant from the sheriff’s department. The boys are dressed in gorgeous suits that must have cost (someone else) a fortune! Kyle asks if one of them is the sketch artist he’s expecting. Dean is quick to volunteer Sam as the police artist (see pic).
Dean asks how Kyle got away. Kyle says that he was hiding when the attacker came toward him. Then he stopped and took off running. Sam asks Kyle to describe the attacker as he takes out a pen and pad. Kyle says he’s six feet tall, dark hair. Kyle isn’t sure what color his eyes were and is confused when Dean asks whether the attacker seemed “animalish”. Kyle says that the guy was normal but had a tattoo of Wile E. Coyote on his arm.
Dean leaves to talk to the doctor (Dr Garrison). Kyle asks Sam if he gets to see the sketch. Sam’s drawing ability stalled somewhere around three years old. Ha!
Outside: another close-up of the toad? Dean mocks Sam’s sketch. Dean and Sam compare notes. The coroner report said that the victims had chunks of their kidneys, lungs, and intestines missing. Sam says what I’m thinking – that’s just gross. Both Sam and Dean admit they’re stumped.
A couple is hiking in the woods. The woman says they are lost. The man insists they are not lost. They come across a house. An old lady holding a cane comes out to greet them. The guy eyes a pie on the window sill. The old lady asks if they’d like to go in. The guy accepts but the girl hesitates. They go in the house for some pie.
Inside they both eat pie as the old lady looks on. Suddenly they both double up in pain.
Hospital: Sam and Dean, still wearing their suits, come to a room where the girl is lying in a bed. She tries to get up saying that she has arrangements to make. Dr Garrison tells her that she needs to rest. As the doctor leaves he asks Sam and Dean what is going on; the town’s going insane. Sam answers that they’ll let him know when they do.
They go in to talk to the girl, Miss Watson. Sam asks how she got away from the old lady. Watson answers that she didn’t eat as much pie as her boyfriend, Ken. When the old lady started to carve Ken (eww!) up, Watson shoved her; the old lady’s head cracked against the stove. Dean looks as disgusted as I do.
Watson asks if they found the little girl that was looking out the window. She adds that the girl was there, and then disappeared. Dean asks for a description of the girl. Please, Sam, leave the sketching to the artists. Watson says the girl looked to be about eight with dark hair and pale skin.
At the old lady’s house, Sam and Dean find no sulfur but the EMF detector goes crazy around the window suggesting that the spirit stood outside the window and watched.
Sam has a theory – he says he was thinking about fairytales. Dean sarcastically says it’s nice and asks if Sam thinks about fairytales often. Hee. Sam explains that fairytales relate to the murders. He explains that the guy and girl hiking in the woods eaten by the old lady is the story of Hansel and Gretel. The three brothers arguing about building houses attacked by the big bad wolf is the story of The Three Little Pigs. Even knowing the title of this episode, I didn’t see the parallels with the fairytales. Ugh.
Dean assumes that fairytales always end with "happily ever after". Sam points out that the originals, by the Brothers Grimm were like folklore; full of sex, violence and cannibalism. But the Grimm stories got sanitized over the years, turned into Disney movies and bedtime stories. Dean guesses that the incidents are reenactments but can’t figure out how the little girl ties into the stories. Scared, Dean asks if it time to do research.
Dean comes out of the library six hours later no more enlightened about the little girl than before. Sam did better – he describes the story of Lillian Bailey, a British medium from the 1930s. Lillian would go into trances where her thoughts and actions were controlled by spirits. Sam figures that the little girl is a ghost puppet-master. The boys stop; look down and see the toad?! What is it with this toad? Dean admits that Sam’s theory is plausible but there’s no way he’s kissing a damn frog. Hmm, a beautiful princess emerges maybe? Yeah, so I like fairytales.
Sam looks up and spots a pumpkin on a window sill as a mouse runs by the pumpkin. He describes to Dean the story of Cinderella. Dean asks if Sam can be any more gay then tells Sam not to answer.
The boys enter the house. Dean snarks that Sam may just find his fairy godmother. They hear noises and take out their guns. The come across a blond girl chained to the kitchen cupboard. She says that her stepmother went crazy and started to beat her and chained her up. They look up to see the little girl. Dean follows her. Isn’t that dangerous? Can’t she decide to control him? When he catches up to her, she disappears leaving behind an apple(?).
Dean shows Sam the apple. Sam says it’s Snow White. They go to the hospital to find out if there’s a girl in a coma. A pretty nurse tells them no but tells them about Cali, Doctor Garrison’s daughter. Hmm.
In Cali’s room, Doctor Garrison is reading a Grimm fairytale to his daughter. As he’s reading, we flash to an old lady heading to her van holding bags of groceries. A dark haired guy emerges to help the grandmother. She thanks him as he puts her groceries in the van. He then pushes her into the van and proceeds to beat her. On his arm is a tattoo of Wile E. Coyote! Hey, the guy looks exactly like Sam’s sketch! :) The little girl watches as the guy drives off in the van.
Sam and Dean arrive at Kali’s room just as the doctor finishes the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Cali is not a little girl, but a dark haired, pale adult woman. She’s Snow White?
The doctor tells them Cali’s story. She’s been in a coma since the age of eight when she swallowed bleach. Yuck! Garrison’s wife brought her to the ER. Dean asks if the doctor’s wife is Cali’s stepmother. The doctor is stunned. He wants to know how Dean knows that. Dean says it’s a lucky guess. The doctor says that his wife passed away the year before. He excuses himself and leaves.
Sam and Dean brainstorm. Dean says it sounds like Misha Barton from The Sixth Sense not The OC. Misha played the part of the girl that was poisoned by her mother who suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Hmm, how did we jump from fairytales to movies?
The boys theorize that Cali was suffering silently while being poisoned by her stepmother. Her spirit got angrier and angrier until it started to lash out. Meanwhile her dad has been reading Grimm stories to her for years.
Just then the old lady (from Little Red Riding Hood) is wheeled in the ER. She is suffering from bite marks and lacerations. Dean gets the old lady’s next of kin’s address. He tells Sam to find a way to stop Cali and goes after “the big bad wolf”. Hehehe.
A little girl wearing a red hood leaves Washington Junior High School. She spots her grandmother’s van and gets in. When the "big bad wolf" turns around from the driver’s seat, the girl tries to get out of the van but is unable to open the door. The “wolf” drives away.
In the hospital, Sam finds the doctor. He tells him that he believes that the doctor’s wife poisoned Cali. The doctor is outraged. He goes into Cali’s room and closes the door. Sam follows him in. He tells the doctor that Cali’s spirit is going to hurt more people (see pic). The doctor asks if Sam has seen her too.
Dean crashes into the house looking for "little red riding hood". He finds her but the "wolf" attacks him. The "wolf" throws Dean against glass.
At the hospital, Garrison says that he thought he was imagining his daughter standing at the foot of his bed. Sam says that Cali wants to tell him something. He urges Garrison to listen to his daughter. So she murders people to get his attention?!
Back at the house, Dean is getting a real beating as 8-year old Cali watches on. Suddenly she hears her dad’s voice. She disappears.
At the hospital, Garrison talks to his daughter. He asks if it’s true that her mother poisoned her. Eight year old Cali appears behind her dad and nods yes as Dean continues to fight the "wolf" at the house. Garrison says that it’s time for Cali to stop and it’s time for him to let her go. He kisses his adult daughter; she flat-lines.
At the house, Dean is about to stab the "wolf" (see pic) when suddenly the wolf-guy tells him to stop. Wolf-guy asks what’s going on.
Later Garrison asks Sam and Dean if it’s really over. He adds that he should have let his daughter go a long time ago. When Dean tells him see you around, the doctor slaps Dean’s back and says he hopes not. Dean tells Sam that it’s good advice. Sam asks if Dean wants him to let him (Dean) go. Dean walks away.
Bear with me here: Cali went on a killing spree because her father kept her alive and read Grimm stories to her? Yes, her stepmother poisoned her, but her stepmother is dead. What's the point of having her father know that his dead wife poisoned his daughter? It doesn't make sense. I think it would have made more sense if Garrison had been responsible somehow. Then Cali's spirit would be seeking revenge and Sam and Dean would be after proof. But instead - poor Garrison watched his daughter die and found out his wife was a monster.
Later as Dean is sleeping, Sam slips away. He goes to the crossroads! He puts his picture in a box and buries the box. The crossroads demon appears. Sam points the Colt at her and tells her to break her deal with Dean (see pic). She notices that the Colt is not the original and asks where Sam got the it. She quickly guesses that he got it from Ruby. She warns that Ruby will get hers.
She tries to taunt Sam to admit that he’ll be relieved once Dean is gone. Sam tells her to shut up. He threatens to kill her but she says that she just a saleswoman. She has a boss who wants Dean’s soul. There is no way to break the deal. She speaks very slowly and annoyingly calm. I hate her.
Sam shoots her and I jump three feet in the air. Whoa! Nice ending!
