SV: 7-8 “Blue” Review

Okay – another episode revolving around a Kryptonian (that’s not Clark). Once again, I’m left wondering what the heck is wrong with these Kryptonians! From one more Lois lightswitch, to Kara's amnesia, to another Clana barn scene, to Grant being revealed as Julien Luthor - this episode was pretty meh.

Outside the Kent house, the wind is rustling the wind chime. Clark sits in front of the fireplace looking at a picture. It’s a picture of Lara, his mom. He looks sad. Kara comes in after surfing with Jimmy in Coast City. Apparently, Jimmy is an amazing surfer. Who knew? Of course, Kara just came back from surfing but she must ask the all important question – where is Lana. Clark replies that Lana is at her Aunt Nell’s. I rejoice because there’s a chance that Lana will have very little screen time in this episode. I am wrong.

Kara takes one look at Clark and realizes that something is wrong. Hey, Kara, it’s Clark's default expression. Clark asks Kara if she ever thinks about her parents or feel that they are calling out to her. Kara says that she thinks of them all the time. Clark says that he feels he knows something about Jor-El, but he doesn’t know anything about his mother. Kara replies that she’ll tell him everything about Lara... in the morning.

Clark looks out the window as a whispering voice says "Save me". Whispering? Lana, is that you? He goes to the barn. He sees that Kara’s crystal is glowing blue. The voice continues to ask Kal-El to save her and to hurry. Clark picks up the crystal (see pic). The voice says that he must go to the Fortress. Yeah, because going there has worked so well in the past.

The crystal glows and Clark is transported to the Fortress. Jor-El’s voice tells Clark that the crystal he is holding was made by Zor-El and it has no place in the Fortress. Clark yells that his mother needs his help. Jor-El’s AI points out that it’s too late for that; like Krypton his mother is gone forever. Clark refuses to believe him (Jor-El AI). Oh, Clark.

Jor-El says that every experiment that Zor-El conducted was motivated by power and greed. Lara’s voice tells Clark to hurry. Jor-El tells Clark not to let human emotion cloud his judgment. Clark chooses to put the crystal in the console. A light goes from the console through Clark to where Lara is now standing. Lara calls Clark Jor-El ("Relic"!). Clark tells her that he’s Kal-El. Lara is in awe of her "beautiful boy". They hug. Aww (see pic).

Clark brings Lara to the house. Clark says that she sounded like she needed help. Lara explains that the last thing she remembers is Krypton exploding. She says that Clark must have heard her cries. Huh? Why would she be calling out to Kal-El?

Lara believes that Jor-El found a way to transport her through the portal forward in time before Krypton exploded. Huh? How can she come through a portal if they were all presumably destroyed so Zod (who’s in the Phantom Zone) can’t get to Earth? Also, Kryptonians could travel ahead through time? Stupid race.

Clark says that she didn’t come through the portal. Kara comes in. Kara and Lara hug. Kara realizes that Lara must have come from her crystal. Clark looks like he wants to be anywhere but there (see pic). Kara asks if Clark had her crystal all this time. Stupid, Clark.

At the mention of crystal, Lara figures out that Zor-El was successful. She realizes that if she’s emerged from the crystal then Zor-El must have as well. Lara says that Zor-El is dangerous. Clark replies that it doesn’t matter – there is one of him and three of them. I guess it sounds good in theory although Kara and Lara don’t look convinced.

At the DP, Grant is looking through some really blurry pictures as Lois watches on. He asks where the face is. Lois points to a really blurry face. Grant explains that a compromising picture of their philandering mayor needs two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Grant suggests Lois take Jimmy with her in the future. She says that her article doesn’t need a picture and wonders what the mayor was smoking. As Grant approaches Lois, he replies that the mayor doesn’t smoke but some women turn men’s judgments upside-down. They kiss.

Lois wants to know if she was hired because of "hedonism" or "journalism". Grant brings out an article ("Fort Ryan Hangar 44 Testosterone Fight Cages") that Lois wrote and tells her that it was just a coincidence that she was incredibly irresistible. They make out on Grant's desk.

Chloe comes up to Grant's door and knocks just as Grant and Lois knock stuff off the desk. Chloe opens the door to see Grant and Lois making out. Chloe looks shocked. She quietly closes the door and leaves.

Kara is in the loft looking out the window. Zor-El shows up. What is it with Krypontians and lofts? Kara tells him that she knows that he tried to kill his brother. Zor-El replies that he’s changed; he’s been given another chance. He wants to be a family with Kara, Lara, and Kal-El. He asks Kara to trust him. Kara hugs him. He tells her to go to the Fortress and wait for him.

Lionel is working at his desk at LuthorCorp. Zor-El shows up. He says he wanted to see Jor-El’s vessel and the crystal led him straight to Lionel. He picks Lionel up and slams him against the desk. Desks are seriously being abused in this episode. Zor-El wants Lionel to convince Lara and Clark to trust him (Zor-El). Lionel refuses. Zor-El throws him to the other side of the office. Zor-El warns Lionel that if he (Lionel) values his life, he should tell Kal-El to trust his uncle. Lionel replies that Kal-El is following his own destiny and he’ll do nothing to change his course. Just as Zor-El is about to grab Lionel, Clark shows up. He hits Zor-El out the window – Zor-El flies off (with a really odd expression on his face). Eh, another Kryptonian who flies.

As Lionel is being wheeled away on a gurney, he tells Clark that Zor-El was looking for a woman – Lara.

At the DP, Chloe confronts Lois about her affair with Grant. It seems that Lois spent the night at Grant’s. Lois feigns ignorance (that shouldn’t be too hard). Lois admits that she’s with Grant but assures Chloe that it had nothing to do with her getting the job. Chloe believes Lois but warns her that not everyone will see it that way. They’ll believe that "Lois Lane started her career on her managing editor’s die hard battery". Hee. Lois counters that she doesn’t care what people think. Chloe says that if Lois wants to be taken seriously, she has to break it off with Grant.

Clark brings his mom to Oliver Queen’s tower apartment. Yeah cause that's been a really safe place in the past. Clark tells Lara that he doesn’t want to lose her now that he’s found her. Lara answers that he’s already lost her. His real mother died with Krypton. Lana enters the apartment. It appears that Kara (in her infinite wisdom) thought that Clark could use Lana’s help. Clark introduces his mom and asks Lana to watch her while he meets up with Kara. Last time Lana was asked to watch someone she got tazered ("Action"), maybe we'll get lucky again. Lana leaves to get tea.

Lara gives Clark his father’s victory ring given to him when he first became a member of the council. She says that it’s Kryptonian tradition to pass it on to the first born son when he comes of age. Clark puts the ring on his finger. Clark’s eyes glow a really freaky blue. The ring looks huge compared to Lara's palm!

Clark leaves. Zor-El is waiting for him in an alleyway not far from Oliver’s pad. Zor-El tells Clark that Kara told him where he (Clark) was. He adds that Kara is waiting at the Fortress so they can begin their mission to save their race. Clark counters that Zor-El doesn’t want to save anyone after what he did to Lionel. Zor-El says that his brother could have saved Krypton but he was a feeble minded pacifist. Clark defends his father. When Clark tries to punch Zor-El, Zor-El stops him (see pic) and throws him into the windshield of a car. Clark realizes that the ring took his powers away.

Zor-El explains that Lara didn’t know that the ring would have that effect on Clark. He adds that if Clark weren’t Lara’s son, he’d end his life right now (see pic). This whole sequence is framed quite oddly. Is it because the actor playing Zor-El is much taller than TW?

At the tower apartment, Lana serves Lara tea. Well, isn't this cozy? Lara observes that Lana is ill at ease. She asks if Lana is worried that she’ll (Lara) discover the darkness Lana’s concealing. Whoa, that was fast. Was Clark dropped on his head as a baby and that’s why he’s so slow to see through Lana? Lara urges Lana to fight the darkness.

Zor-El shows up and Lara tells Lana to run. Zor-El takes Lara by the arm but Lana stands in their way and demands that Zor-El lets Lara go. Hey, Lana, you lost Clark’s powers remember? Zor-El throws Lana out of the way just as Clark comes in time to say "Lana". Meh.

At the DP, Chloe is surprised by Clark's injuries (see pic). Clark explains to Chloe what happened. Chloe wisely tells Clark that the sad reality is that his mom died and he can’t bring people back from the dead. Really, Chloe? Because just about every character has been brought back from the dead. He replies that Lara is his mother and he has to do what is necessary to save her. Clark asks Chloe to drive him back to Smallville so he can get the ring off his finger and go to the Fortress.

Lex plays pool (see pic)... with Grant. Who didn’t see that coming? Lex warns Grant to stay away from Lois. He tells Grant that Grant can date all the girls from the copy room to the boardroom, just not Lois Lane. Lois has insatiable curiosity and it’s only a matter of time before she connects the dots. MR is an amazing actor. Once again he’s asked to spew drivel and he does so with a straight face. I'm, on the other hand, laughing hysterically. Lex tells Grant that he has to end it with Lois. Grant says that he’s grateful for everything Lex has done, but it doesn’t entitle Lex to run his life. Lex disagrees. He reminds Grant that if it weren’t for him, Grant would be nothing.

At the Fortress, Lara tells Kara to leave. Zor-El says that it’s their duty to repopulate the planet. When Lara refuses, Zor-El threatens Clark life. Kara is shocked. Zor-El reconfigures the Fortress’ console to cause a solar eclipse that will kill the human race! Lara asks what will happen to Kal-El. Zor-El replies that he’ll get Kal-El to the shelter of the Fortress if Lara promises to go along with his plans.

At the farm, Clark is trying desperately to remove the ring from his finger. Chloe brings Clark the key. The sky begins to darken. Chloe checks the local weather and realizes that this isn’t normal. Clark realizes that Zor-El caused this. Is it a good idea to stare at a solar eclipse?

At the Planet everyone has stopped working to look at the solar eclipse. Grant comes in and tells them all to get to work. He asks to speak to Lois. Once in his office, Lois and Grant spew off clichés at one another. Heh, I thought that as reporters, they had a way with words - I guess not. They agree that they should break it off; their relationship is not professional. At the door, Grant and Lois jump in each others arms and kiss. That went well.

At the Fortress, Lara removes a Kryptonian dagger from the console. She explains to Kara that while Jor-El was a pacifist he believed in protecting his family. Kara says that she’ll take care of her father. Zor-El reappears. He tells Lara that Kal-El is nowhere to be found. Lara realizes that it was a ruse to placate her. Kara approaches and raises the dagger at Zor-El. Zor-El stops her easily. Did Lana show Kara how to use the dagger? What a pathetic attempt.

Zor-El is angry. Kara says that humans are good people and they are worth defending. Superman?! Zor-El says that Kara leaves him no choice. When Lara tries to intervene, Zor-El throws her 30 feet. Zor-El starts to strangle Kara but Clark disables him with green K. Clark removes Kara’s crystal from the console putting a stop to the eclipse.

Lara tells Clark to shatter the crystal – Zor-El must be destroyed. Clark refuses. Lara tells him that as long as the ring is on his finger, Clark can’t fulfill the destiny that Jor-El and Lara have envisioned for him. Clark (as usual) says that it doesn’t matter. The green K rolls off Zor-El (stupid Clark) and he goes after Kara. Clark destroys the crystal. Lara and Zor-El disappear. The ring on Clark’s finger disappears and I’m glad that story arc is over. Clark looks for Kara but can’t find her.

Kara is lying in the middle of a street in the rain. She stumbles to a diner where she asks the waitress where she is. The waitress replies that Kara is in Detroit. Kara looks confused. The waitress asks Kara her name. Kara doesn’t know. Color me uninterested.

Just what I was hoping for – a Clana barn scene. Clark blames himself for Kara’s disappearance. Yes, Clark, this time it’s your fault. Lana tries to console him. Clark says that Jor-El was right. He shouldn’t have let emotions get in the way of common sense. Clark says that he always thought that if he ever met his mother, she might not live up to the idea he had of her. But she lived up to his expectations. He got that from being with her for an hour?

Lana takes this opportunity to bring the conversation back to her. She tells Clark that she’ll never be as strong as his mother. Clark says that they all make mistakes (some more than others) but how they come back from the mistakes is what matters (I’m sure Lex, Lionel, Marilyn, the clone, and the guy who died in prison would disagree). Lana asks how she can come back when she feels that she’s at the point of no return. Let her go, Clark! Clark reminds her how she helped his mom and assures her that she’s not that far gone. They hug. Oh, Clark. Lara, come back and talk some sense into your boy!!

At the Planet, Lois is trying to get her eclipse story by some deadline. Grant tells her to forget it; another reporter has already submitted the eclipse story. Chloe asks if that’s the fallout from Lois breaking it off with Grant. Lois lies and says yes. Grant sends Lois a text message telling her that he can’t wait for tonight.

Mansion: Grant assures Lex that he’s broken it off with Lois. Grant throws a bunch of listening devices on Lex’s desk. Grant tells Lex that the spying stops now. Lex apologizes. Grant tells Lex that they can’t keep the secret forever. He’s not afraid of Lionel. Lex says that Grant should be. Lex reminds Grant that Lionel told the world Grant was dead and secretly put Grant up for adoption because Lionel’s wife was terminally ill. Huh? I’m confused. Why would Lionel do that? Lex says that it better that the world know him as Grant Gabriel. Grant replies that his name is Julien Luthor ("Memoria"?). That settles it - Chloe's definitely wrong; people come back from the dead everyday in SV.

At the Fortress, Clark asks Jor-El to help him find Kara. Jor-El replies that if Clark had listened to him, none of this would have happened. He says that Kara’s wellbeing is no longer their concern. Clark answers that he knows how Jor-El was on Krypton. He asks what happened to helping others. Jor-El replies that that is not his mission. Jor-El adds that he did not cause Kara’s disappearance. He tells Clark that he defied him once again and appears to lack the capacity to learn his lesson; for that Clark must face consequences... again.

Poll of the day, then, can you explain in any way that makes coherent sense how Grant could possibly be Julian at all?

Yeah, didn't think so.

God, I hate these writers.

Also, why did we need Lana in this episode at all?

Clark was with Chloe's mom in Ollie's clock tower. It would have been nice to have the reversal. Hell, Chloe already works in Metropolis and since she's not busy doing her editor, she'd have had time to Lara-sit.

Also, you missed one. It's not just Lionel, Lex, Marilyn and the Lana!Clone that would disagree. I think that poor sap who died in prison of cancer would also be angry at this new "redeemed" Lana. You know, the one who turns Clark's heart felt conversation and pain about his mom around so it's all about HER.

Man, I can't tell you how sick I am of all of this after six seasons. It's like Wrath never even happened.

Hi,
I've been looking forward to your review of "Blue" all week. GREAT review, thanks. I love your coments (Yeah, because going there has worked so well in the past. What is it with Krypontians and lofts?... ) - AWESOME. :)
You know, I can't blame Clark so much - he wanted to see his mother. I think, I can understand this. And I'm sad he lost her forever.
Although responses on "Blue" thread on TWoP are very negative, I'm still looking forward to see this ep. Can I hope Tom has a lot of screentime in this ep?

Yeah I didn't think of that. I was really hoping for a Lana-free episode. All I got is more bitter.

Thanks, I added the "poor sap" to the list.

Thank you, Toby, for the feedback! :)

Hi!
I really enjoy your SV reviews. Especially this one on the episode "Blue". I agreed with everything you said. I was hoping for Chloe to have a converstaion with Lara but it didn't happen. Of course, it's always about Lana and her evil ways.
I wrote my blog this week about SV. I would love for you to check it out:)
It's over at tubetalk.blogspot.com (Commentary with a Co-ed)
Thanks again for the great review!

Thanks for your info about Tom's screentime. It's a pity, we can't see new episode of SV or SN these week (I like SN too, but SV more - you know - Tom :)). I wish you HAPPY THANKSGIVING and I look forward to your next review.
