SN: 3-6 "Red Sky at Morning" Review
I enjoyed this episode. I like the one-upmanship between Sam/Dean and Bella – very entertaining (as long as it’s not done every week and it’s an original situation).
A woman is out jogging; she stops at a fountain for some water; when she looks up she sees a ship in the distance. The ship disappears. She heads home.
The woman is showering when she senses some sort of presence. She looks around but sees nothing. Suddenly an arm grabs her from behind and she drops to the floor.
In the Impala, Dean tells Sam that he’s been waiting for Sam to open up. Sam looks confused. Dean mentions the bullet missing from the Colt. He correctly surmises that Sam went after the crossroads demon and that he (Sam) shot her. Sam’s defense is that she was a smartass. Oh, Sam, since when is “smartass” a reason to kill (and use one of those precious bullets – unless they’re not special anymore). Dean asks if he’s out of his deal. Sam says that someone else holds the contract and he’s doesn’t know who. Dean sarcastically replies that finding out who holds the contract would have been easier to do had Sam not killed the crossroads demon. Sam makes no apologies – he cares about Dean and he’s going to find a way to save him.
Posing as sheriff’s department detectives, the boys interview an older lady (Ms Case) about the girl that was murdered in her shower. The girl is Ms Case’s niece, Sheila. Ms Case says that when she came home she found Sheila drowned in the shower. She is confused as to how someone can drown in the shower. Didn’t the entity that grabbed Sheila leave marks on her neck?
Sam asks whether the niece seemed frightened or different in the days before her death. Ms Case guesses that Sam and Dean work with Alex. Dean, always ready to bullshit, happily admits that they are in fact working with Alex. Ms Case says that she thought the case was solved. Sam answers that no, it’s not solved yet. Ms Case ponders that for a moment before adding that Sheila mentioned that she saw a boat a few days before her death. She asks if Sam and Dean believe it to be a ghost ship like Alex. Sam answers maybe. Ms Case touches Sam’s hand (in a suggestive manner) and tells him to contact her if he needs anything… anything at all. Sam looks disturbed; Dean looks amused.
The boys walk back to the Impala. Dean teases Sam about his “girlfriend”. Dean wonders whether Alex is another hunter like them. Sam replies that it doesn’t change their job. He says that the ship isn’t the first one that’s been seen. Every thirty-seven years like clockwork, there are reports of a vanishing three mast clipper ship with a rash of strange dry-land drownings. Lore has it that seeing the ship is a death omen.
They get to where they parked the Impala only to find the car gone. Dean gets very agitated; he starts to hyperventilate. Bella shows up. She says she had the car towed. Sam realizes that she’s “Alex” and she’s working with Ms Case. Bella says Gert (Ms Case) is an old friend. Bella sells charms and performs séances to comfort those who need it, like Gert. When Sam asks how she sleeps at night, Bella answers on silk sheets, naked on money. Dean considers this. Sam reminds Bella that she shot him. Bella says that she barely grazed him and adds to Dean that Sam’s a bit of a Drama Queen.
Dean tells Bella that the ghost ship is real. Bella is aware of that but is upset that Sam and Dean told Gert that the case was not solved. When Dean insists that the case is not solved, Bella says that Gert didn’t know that and now Gert refuses to pay her. Ah, that’s why she had the Impala towed. Bella warns Sam and Dean to stay out of her way.
As Bella leaves, Dean asks if he can shoot her. Sam answers not in public. Ha! Even Sam is on edge.
Cut to the outside of a beautiful home – inside a man is washing his face when a shadow passes by. He looks around. Then he notices that his bath tub is filling with dark black oil-like substance. He goes to investigate (no, run you dummy!). Suddenly a hand shoots up from the water and appears to strangle him.
Bella interviews a man, Peter, about the most recent death (his brother). Peter says that the police claim that his brother drowned. He starts to ask how his brother could drown when Bella interrups him to ask for more details about the ship his brother saw. Sam and Dean show up before Peter answers. They pretend to be detectives and ask the reporter (Bella) to leave. She doesn’t look happy as she leaves.
Sam asks about the ship. Peter says that it’s like the old Yankee clippers. He describes it in great detail and adds that he saw it too. Uh oh! Sam and Dean look at each other. They notice that Bella is ratting on them to the officers, they make a hasty retreat.
As the boys are preparing their weapons, Bella comes up behind them. She wants to know why they are still there. Sam explains that Peter saw the ship too and is next to die. Sam and Dean want to save him. Bella is unimpressed. She says that the guy can’t be saved in time and the boys know it. Dean says that they help people. Bella scoffs and tells them that they are a stone’s throw from being serial killers. She says that she gets paid to do a job and she does it. Huh? She’s a lying, thieving, con artist. How is that a good thing?
Peter is puttering around in the house as Sam and Dean watch from the car. Sam goes through the brothers’ histories. No shady deals but six years before they inherited 120 million (!) when their father passed away. Sam and Dean try to find a reason for why the brothers and Sheila saw the ship. Just then, Peter comes out yelling at them to stay away from him. He gets in his car, starts to drive away when the car suddenly stops. Sam and Dean run for their guns. Meanwhile Peter sees a ghost in the passenger seat beside him and starts spewing out water. Dean shoots at the spirit but misses. I’m surprised Dean didn’t hit Peter. They are too late, Peter is dead - drowned. Although Sam and Dean really should have tried CPR on him before giving up.
Later in the Impala, Dean tries to console Sam about not being able to save the guy. Sam says that lately he feels like he can’t save anybody. Aw.
Sam and Dean are squatting in an empty house when Bella shows up. Geez, she like a fly that won’t go away! She indirectly says I told you so about not being able to save Peter. Dean threatens her. Bella says that she comes bearing gifts. She says that she’s ID’ed the ship – it’s a merchant sailing vessel with a colorful history. In 1859 a sailor was accused of treason, he was tried onboard and hanged. He was 37 years old. Sam remarks that it explains the 37 year cycle.
Bella shows the boys a picture of the sailor. Dean says that it looks like the spirit they saw in the car the night before but the spirit was missing a hand. Bella says that the sailor’s right hand was cut off to make a hand of glory. Eww! Dean cracks an inappropriate joke – hee! Sam exposits that the right hand of a hanged man is a very powerful cult object. Sam wonders why the spirit is choosing those victims. Bella says it doesn’t matter. What they should do is find the hand, burn it and stop the murders. She adds that she knows where the hand is located and she needs help to get it. Since when is Bella all gung ho to help people? Sounds fishy to me.
Bella, dressed in a beautiful black gown, asks Dean what’s taking him so long. Dean is upstairs getting ready and complaining at the same time. He comes down the stairs in a tux and bow tie. Whoa! I hold my breath! He looks amazing. Bella thinks so too. Dean thinks he looks ridiculous. Bella replies that when this is over, they should have angry sex. Dean is at a loss for words. He awkwardly crosses his arms and tells her not to objectify him (ha! see topmost pic); but is obviously pleased by the turn of events. Jensen plays this scene to perfection.
At the Sea Pines Maritime Museum, Bella chastises Dean for chewing gum at this event. Dean sticks the gum under the drink fountain and makes a face (see pic). That Dean - he's all class.
Dean and Bella meet Sam and his date, Ms Case (see pic). Ms Case is not shy. She paws Sam at every opportunity. Too funny. As it turns out though, Sam really does nothing but play the part of Gert’s boy toy.
Dean and Bella try to figure a way to go upstairs. They snark at each other. Bella pretends to faint. Dean asks the waiter if they are any shellfish in the hors d'oeuvres. When the waiter replies no, Dean takes one and stuffs his face. Any time is the time for food, eh Dean? A guard asks what is going on. Dean explains that his "wife" can’t handle her liquor. He asks if he can take her upstairs till she recovers. Dean carries Bella as the guard leads them upstairs.
Once upstairs, Dean unceremoniously dumps Bella on the couch. Bella tells Dean that the hand is in room 235. Dean leaves to retrieve the hand.
Meanwhile, Sam and Gert dance; Gert puts the moves on Sam. Lucky Gert. Sam is hilariously uncomfortable.
Dean manages to break into the case with the sailor’s hand as Bella waits for him in the other room. A guard checks in on her and Dean. Thinking quickly, Bella opens door looking like she and her “husband” were busy. As the guard leaves, he bumps into Dean. The guard is amused by the turn of events.
Dean shows Bella the sailor’s hand (okay that’s just gross). Bella offers to put it in her purse. Eww. Dean says he can handle it. Okay lame pun.
Back on the dance floor, Sam is pondering the meaning of life... no he’s wondering just how long the song is. Gert wants the song to last forever. The conversation shifts to the case. Gert tells Sam that in a way the brothers that died had it coming. The brothers were suspected in the death of their dad but nothing was ever proven. Sam asks about Sheila. Gert answers that Sheila was in a car accident when she was a teenager and her cousin was killed.
Dean and Bella join the happy couple and Bella leaves with Gert. In the car, Dean realizes that he’s been had by Bella, again. The hand of glory is gone!
Bella is sitting in her car, counting her money when she sees the ship. Uh oh!
At the house, Dean is fuming at being duped again. Bella knocks frantically at the door. She tells them that she sold the sailor's hand to a buyer. Bella used Sam and Dean as a cover to get her hands on the hand (I couldn’t resist). Sam tells her to buy it back from the buyer. Bella says that the hand is halfway across the ocean; she can’t get it back in time.
When Sam asks in time for what, she admits that she saw the ship. Dean says that he knew she was an immoral, conniving, con artist bitch but he didn’t think she was that low. Bella doesn’t understand Dean’s outburst. Sam explains that they’ve figured out the spirit’s motive. The captain of the ship was the brother of the man that was hanged. The spirit is going after people that have spilt their own family’s blood. Dean smugly wants to know who Sheila killed (see pic).
Sheila asks for their help. Dean asks how a couple of “serial killers” can help her. Sheila says that what she said before was harsh but it shouldn’t warrant a death sentence. Sam rightfully points out that that’s not why she has a death sentence. Bella says that they’d never understand and she’s going deal with it herself. Dean asks if she realizes that she sold the only thing that could save her life. Bella says she’s aware of it. Sam thinks that that it might not be the only thing. Ooh, Sam’s got a plan.
Dean and Bella watch as Sam sets up to summon a spirit. A sudden storm picks up and Sam starts to read the incantation while Dean is on the lookout for the spirit. The spirit appears and throws Dean 30 feet. Sam continues to read as Bella starts spewing water (drowning) like Peter did. Dean goes over to Bella but he can’t do anything to help. When Sam finishes the incantation, the storm passes. The two spirit brothers face each other. The hanged brother’s spirit accuses his brother, the captain, of killing him. The captain apologizes. They both disappear in a burst of water. Bella is okay. Hmm, Bella has gone after two objects so far and both objects turned on her. Maybe she should take the hint.
At the house, the boys are preparing to leave. Bella barges in. She throws $10 grand at Sam and Dean. She doesn’t want to owe them anything (and she doesn't want to thank them either).
Later, in the Impala, Dean says that he’s thought about it and he understands why Sam went after the crossroads demon. He says that if the situations were reversed, he’d have done the same thing. He sees what Sam is going through but he believes that Sam is stronger than he (Dean) is. Sam will come out okay. Dean apologizes for what he’s putting Sam through. Sam angrily tells Dean to screw himself (see pic). He says he doesn’t want Dean’s apology and that he’s a big boy that can take care of himself. He says that he doesn’t want Dean to worry about him. He wants Dean to give a crap that he’s (Dean) dying. Dean changes the subject.
