SN: 3-7 “Fresh Blood” Review
I think this is the first SN episode that’s disappointed me. Maybe it’s because I’m not into vampire stories and not really into gore. Maybe it’s because I was really happy to see Gordon Walker again but was ultimately disappointed at the fate of such an awesome character. I did like that Sam finally got through to Dean.
It’s dark; Bella is heading to her car when Gordon Walker shows up. He’s out of prison and has information that Bella was in Massachusetts with the Winchester brothers. He demands she tell him where they are. When Bella feigns ignorance, he points a gun at her. Bella appears unimpressed. She asks him what is so pressing about finding the boys. Gordon explains that Sam is the anti-Christ. Bella doesn’t believe him. Gordon insists the world is hanging in the balance.
Bella suggests that Gordon make her an offer and she’ll cooperate with him. Gordon replies that his offer is she tells him where to find Sam or he’ll kill her. Bella cockily points out that he’d be no closer to finding Sam and Dean.
Gordon reconsiders and offers her three grand. Bella scoffs at the offer. She spots a mojo bag hanging from Gordon’s belt and agrees to trade it for the boys’ whereabouts. Gordon tells her that that artifact is 100 years old and priceless. but eventually gives her the bag. Bella calls Dean to ask where they are. Why would Dean tell her anything? He doesn’t trust her. Why would Bella betray Sam and Dean after they saved her skin? Did she really believe that giving them ten grand was thanks enough?
It’s dark; Sam and Dean are in the middle of a job. They see blood on the street and come across a guy lying in the street with blood dripping from an open wound on his throat. Dean asks where she went. The guy points and Dean runs in that direction. He looks around but can’t spot her. He takes the machete he’s holding and cuts his arm (see pic). Ewwwwwww.
A woman steps out from the shadows. Her mouth is covered in blood. Dean taunts that he tastes better than he smells (I believe it). He puts the machete down. As she bites him on the neck, he injects her with something and she falls unconscious to the floor. Sam approaches. He looks worried. He says Dean was cutting it close. Dean, with a happy grin on his face, replies that he was just chumming the waters.
In a run down room, the vampire wakes up tied to a chair as Sam and Dean look on. Sam asks where her nest is. She claims to not know what they are talking about. She tells them that she doesn’t feel well. Dean threatens her with another shot of dead man’s blood. Er, where did they get that? Do I want to know? She asks them to let her go. She (Lucy) explains that she took something and she just wants to come down. Really cryptic there, Lucy.
Sam tells her that they’ll let her go if she tells them what happened. Dean goes along with Sam’s lie. Lucy says that she was at the Spider club (neat name!). A guy was buying her drinks. She describes him as old, like 30, brown hair, wearing a leather jacket. She says that his name was Deacon or Dixon. Dixon told her he had something new and put a few drops into her drink. Dean asks if the stuff was thick and red. When she says yes, Dean tells her that she took vampire blood – the nastiest virus out there. He asks whether light is too bright and sunlight hurts her skin. She says yes and adds that she can hear Dean’s blood pumping; she can hear a heart beating from half a block away. Sam looks sympathetic; Dean not so much.
Dean tells her that she’s already killed two people. She insists that it was an hallucination from being drugged with a roofie. Sam and Dean move away from her and discuss their options. Dean says they don’t have a choice and heads towards her with the machete. We hear a splat. I feel bad for Lucy until I realized she stupidly drank something she knew a stranger had dosed. Yes, she thought it was a roofie; but even so, she put herself in a vulnerable position where she could have been raped and/or killed. Really idiotic.
The guy that Lucy attacked lies in a hospital bed. Gordon and Kubrick, posing as FBI agents, ask him to describe his attacker. He replies that the girl was crazy; had PCP strength and gnawed on his neck. Gordon asks if he ingested any of her blood. The guy says no. Gordon explains that she was infected by a dangerous virus and that they would have to kill him if he had ingested her blood. The guy thinks it’s a joke until he looks up at Gordon. The guy says that he was saved by two guys – one of them was tall.
Sam and Dean exit the Spider Club. Sam is sure that the Spider Club is the hunting path as two other blondes (beside Lucy) have gone missing. Dean points out a couple walking toward an alley – the girl is blonde. Lucky guess.
The guy asks the blonde if she’s ready. He says one taste and she’ll never be the same. I’m for cutting her head off now. She opens her mouth. Dean grabs the guy and punches him. Sam tells the girl to get out of there. The guy slams Dean on the wall and takes off. Sam and Dean follow. As they turn the corner, they come face to face with Gordon and Kubrick. Somehow Sam and Dean dodge behind a car. I say "somehow" because the scene's editing is really odd. One minute Sam and Dean are staring into the barrel of Gordon’s gun, the next they’re behind a car as Gordon and Kubrick shoot at them.
Dean tells Sam to run and he’ll (Dean) throw them off. Sam starts to object but Dean runs out. Dean makes it over a car and jumps into a warehouse window. Kubrick follows. Gordon goes looking for Sam but he is knocked out by Dixon.
In the seedy room, Sam waits and worries for Dean. Dean shows up saying he stopped for some food (jerk!). Sam is angry at the move Dean pulled in the alley. Dean excuses his behavior as being badass. I’d say he’s got it half right.
Dean mentions that Gordon is out of jail. Sam wonders how Gordon found them. Dean remembers Bella’s phone call. He calls her. She answers cheerily (and I want to smack her). He asks her if she really called to thank him. She freely and happily admits that she called to find out where they were to tell Gordon. She says that Gordon had a gun on her and asks what she was supposed to do. Dean angrily suggests that she should have picked up the phone and told them "a raging psychopath" was on their tail. Bella apologizes half-heartedly (and I want to smack her again). Dean threatens that if he and Sam make it out alive, the first thing he’ll do is kill her (I cheer). Dean sounds serious and Bella looks... worried. Good.
Gordon wakes up tied down in a warehouse somewhere. He sees two blondes – their arms are shackled to the ceiling. Dixon comes up to them and feeds them blood. He tells them that the hunger will pass and they’ll feel much better. Gordon asks who they are. Dixon replies that they are family. Nice way to treat family. Gordon says that Dixon took the girls from the street and turned them into monsters. Dixon explains that they are a dying breed. He blames Gordon for his people being nearly extinct. Gordon eggs him on. Dixon says that Gordon is responsible for killing his daughter and he’ll take great satisfaction in Gordon being lunch for his new daughters. Ick, ick, ick! Gordon eggs him on some more. Dixon apologizes to his "daughters" and adds that he’ll go out and get them lunch. He cuts Gordon’s arm and his own and mixes their blood as Gordon begs him not to.
In a run-down room, Sam and Dean prepare their weapons. Sam says that the vampire is still out there but they must take care of Gordon first. Dean tells Sam that Gordon’s not leaving them too many options. Sam calmly replies that they have to kill him (Gordon). Dean is surprised by Sam’s resolve. Sam adds that Gordon won’t stop until either they’re dead or he is.
Bella calls Dean - looks like she’s been mulling over Dean’s threat. She says that she doesn’t like grudges or threats to her life so she’s pinpointed Gordon’s exact location. She says that she used a talking board to contact the other side. She gives Dean Gordon’s location and adds that the spirit said that they should leave town, run like heck, and don’t go after Gordon.
At the warehouse, Gordon is strung up like the two blondes. His hearing is heightened and he’s sensitive to light. He breaks free. The blondes ask for his help. Gordon looks at them.
Gordon walks outside. He spots a poor sap changing the tire on his car. He attacks him. This scene drags and drags for a long time.
Sam and Dean walk cautiously into the warehouse. The girls’ decapitated bodies hang from the ceiling. Ewww. Dixon sits in despair. Sam asks what happened. Dixon replies Gordon Walker. He whines that he should have never brought Gordon near his family. Dean is unsympathetic. Dixon says that he’s staring down eternity alone; he doesn’t care anymore. He asks if Dean knows what it’s like to not care anymore - it’s like being dead already. I think Dean can relate to that. Sam says that the girls’ heads were ripped off. He asks what Dixon did to Gordon.
In his SUV, Kubrick is loading his gun. He hears noises and Gordon appears suddenly behind him. Kubrick asks if Gordon is okay. Gordon replies not even close; he says that the vampire turned him. Kubrick apologizes and says that he must kill Gordon. Gordon says that he must kill Sam before Kubrick kills him. Kubrick answers that he can’t let Gordon walk out of there. As Kubrick approaches Gordon with a machete, Gordon guts him and then apologizes. Who didn't see that coming?
At the hotel, Sam and Dean are no closer to finding Gordon. Sam takes their cell phones and destroys them so Gordon can’t use the signals to track them down. Er, if they are looking for Gordon, wouldn’t they want him to be able to find them? Dean tells Sam to stay put, he’s going after Gordon. Sam replies that Dean is not going alone. Dean shrugs and calls it another (dangerous) day at the office. Sam asks if Dean is the guy with nothing to lose... since he’s already dead. Sam says that he’s sick and tired of Dean’s kamikaze trick. Dean cracks an inappropriate joke and asks if he’s supposed to sit around feeling sorry for himself. Sam tells Dean to stop acting like he’s not afraid. Dean insists he’s not afraid. Sam says that he sees right through his brother. Dean is scared because his year’s running out and he’s still going to hell. Sam adds that he knows Dean better than anyone; he’s been following Dean around since he (Sam) was four trying to be just like him. He wants Dean to drop the act and just be his brother again (see pic). It's a very touching moment between the boys.
Dean reconsiders his plan (of going after Gordon alone). He says they’ll hole up, cover their scent, and wait the night out. Whoa – I think Sam got through to Dean this time. I adore the piano solo playing in the background during this scene.
Dean’s cell phone rings. It’s Gordon. He knows they’ve changed their cell phone numbers because their scent is all over the phone store. Gordon says that he’d like the boys to come to him. A girl comes on the line begging Sam and Dean to save her. Dean tries to appeal to Gordon’s hunter instinct. Gordon replies that he’s no longer a hunter, he’s a monster.
The boys arrive with guns drawn at the warehouse. They free the girl and Dean carries her out. When he and the girl pass through a garage door, the door slams shut before Sam can get out. Dean yells at Sam to be careful.
Sam yells to Gordon to come out and fight. The place is pitch-black. Sam can’t see two feet ahead of him but Gordon’s enhanced senses allow him to see Sam perfectly. Gordon says that he’s given up everything but it’s been worth it because he’s finally going to kill the most dangerous thing he’s ever hunted. He says that Sam is not human (I’m beginning to have my doubts too). Sam swings blindly as he reminds Gordon that he didn’t kill the girl. Gordon replies that he did much worse.
Outside the girl attacks Dean. Dean shoots her with the Colt.
Gordon says that Sam may have others fooled but Gordon knows what it’s like to walk around with something evil inside you (so does SV-Lana). He adds that it’s too bad Sam won’t do the right thing and kill himself. Gordon says that he’ll kill himself after he kills Sam.
Gordon jumps at Sam and they both go through a wall. Dean tries to gun Gordon down but Gordon hits him and starts to suck his blood. Er, Gordon, you don’t have time for that – remember Sam? As if on cue Sam hits him from behind. They fight. Sam gets a hold of wire and manages to wrap it around Gordon’s throat. He continues to tighten the wire until Gordon’s head is ripped off. Ewww. It’s an interesting parallel to Gordon doing the same thing to Dixon’s "daughters". Gordon was a monster - maybe Sam is one too? And just how strong is Sam?
Dean gets up shakily. He sees Gordon’s torso. He tells Sam that he discharged a super vamped Gordon with no weapon. He calls it a little reckless. How come he's not surprised by Sam's strength?
Dean tries to fix a rattle in the Impala’s engine while Sam sits close by. Dean asks Sam to come over. He gives Sam a lesson in car tuning. Sam asks what’s going on. Dean wants Sam to fix the Impala (see pic). He says that it’s time for Sam to learn how to fix the car... for the future. Dean adds that it’s his job to show his little brother the ropes. Sam does as he’s told. Yay, big brother Dean’s back!
I'm left wondering what Bella's warning was about - arbitrary drama?
