SV: 7-7 “Wrath” Review

Another Lana-centric episode – I was ready to hate it and after the first 10 minutes I was ready to shut the TV off. But now that I've watched it, I think this is an excellent episode! I’m glad I stuck to it.

We open on a field where two horses are galloping. Sappy music plays (okay, I like the song. It’s My Eyes by Travis).

Deep in my heart
There's no room for crying
But I'm trying to see your point of view
Deep in my heart
I'm afraid I'm dying
I'd be lying if I said I'm not
Welcome in, welcome in

Aw, it’s Clark and Lana. Lana’s in the lead. They gallop past the infamous oak tree. I breathe a sigh of relief when they don’t stop.

Ya ya yay
Ya ya yay
You got my eyes
We can't see what you'll be
You can't disguise
Either way
I will pray
You will be wise
Pretty soon you will see
Tears in my eyes

What?! It's a long scene - I had time to memorize the lyrics.

They finally arrive at the house. Lana thanks Clark for the afternoon, the champagne and the truffles. Clark’s going all out. He mentions that Lana’s been distant lately and adds that he knows why. Between Kara and the crystal, things haven’t been normal. Lana assures him that she wouldn’t be with someone who shoots lasers from his eyes if she wanted normal. They kiss (chastely). Clark says everything they’ve been through has been worth it. I gag.

Thunder can be heard in the distance. As they head toward the house, Clark feels weak. Lana spots the green K. She about to get rid of it when they’re hit my lightning. The windmill topples toward Clark – Lana stops it. She looks really happy.

Clark and Lana speed into the barn. Clark tells Lana that she has to be careful with the speed thing. Lana gushes that she was moving and everything else was standing still. She asks how come Clark never told her it was like this. Clark mumbles that it’s one of those things where you had to be there. Ha!

Clark once again tries to warn Lana, but Lana cuts him off. She says that she can handle it. Clark says that they have to find a way to get rid of her abilities. Lana replies that being on an equal playing field can have its benefits. Clark being Clark asks like what (oh, Clark). She manhandles Clark who appears to enjoy it because he whooshes them away. TW looks great!

Chloe is having coffee at the Talon when mild earthquakes can be felt. She looks concerned.

At the farm, Clark comes down the stairs to see Lana wearing his shirt. Lana x-rays him. She says that she wishes this had happened a long time ago; there’s always a part that she couldn’t get close to. They kiss – Chloe interrupts. Chloe’s my hero!

Chloe tells Clark that she’s left him ten messages. Clark sheepishly (as only TW can) replies that they’ve been busy. Chloe says that there have constant seismic earthquakes all over Smallville since 2 o’clock (see pic).

Clark says that was probably them. Chloe takes a second to catch up and whispers to Lana that she (Chloe) thought they couldn’t (see pic). Clark is stunned that they’ve discussed this. Lana accidentally breaks the refrigerator door handle and goes looking for a screwdriver.

Chloe asks Clark to explain. When he does, she tells him that they’ve been there, done that and it doesn’t end well. She reminds him of Eric Summers ("Leech"). Clark replies that Lana is not going to go all psycho. Chloe reminds Clark of his dad’s heart condition and adds that the extra-curricular activities this partial transfer allows don’t outweigh what can happen to Lana. Clark asks Chloe to keep an eye on Lana. Lana listens from the bedroom (strange place for a screwdriver). Lana breaks a mirror. Uh oh.

At the Talon, Lana admits that she heard Clark ask Chloe to watch over her. Lana tries to explain how having powers makes her feel. Lana says that if Chloe were in her shoes that she’d use the powers to get stories. Chloe reminds her that she’s not a reporter. Lana says that she still has a story to tell.

In the Luthor mansion, minion #20902 shows Lex his latest research (see pic). He says that they aren’t sure what it is – it’s metallic dust that somehow liquefied. Lex says that the dust was the last remnant of Fine’s ship; he wants whatever 20902 did to be reversed back. Minion swears he’s done nothing to the sample. He says that the dust is evolving; the metal is sentient. It’s alive! He gives Lex a hard drive with all his data on Project Scion. He says the organism exhibits conscious behavior and is trying to get out of container.

In the Chamber of Lex Luthor, Lana looks on as Lex locks the hard drive in a vault. When Lex and 20902 leave she zips to the mansion, breaks into the safe and steals the hard drive.

At LuthorCorp, Lionel is talking to Martha (!). Clark comes in. He looks really upset. He tells Lionel about Lana. He asks if Lionel knows of a way to reverse the effects. Huh? Clark was able to reverse the effects twice before. He knows how.

Lionel warns Clark that Lana might not be the person he thinks she is. Go, Lionel! Clark says that Lana is recovering from being with Lex. Oh, shut up Clark. Lionel tells him about Lana being behind his kidnapping. Clark doesn’t believe that. Lionel asks whether Clark has ever taken an honest look at Lana. Clark gets angry. He replies that if Lionel is saying this because he believes that Clark is wasting his time with Lana instead of pursuing Jor-El’s master plan, it’s his (Clark) decision to make. Oh, Clark. Lionel counters by telling Clark that even Samson’s trust in Delilah didn’t stop her from betraying him. Go, Lionel!

Clark goes back to the Kent farm to look for Lana. He spots her agenda and looks through it. Lex, walking into the house, says that he wouldn’t trust her either (see pic). Lex says that someone left his vault door on the rug and Lana was seen leaving the mansion. Clark admits that Lana’s been infected by something that’s given her superhuman strength. He adds that Lex probably knows what she’s after.

Lex thought that Lana had moved on but revenge is like an addiction. Clark replies that he knows Lana better than Lex does. Lex asks if that is the reason Clark is going through her things. Touché, Lex. Lex guesses that Clark is the last to know about the Isis Foundation. I love MR’s smile (see pic). Lex says that on the surface it appears to be a foundation to help the meteor infected. He says that he sees it in Clark’s eyes – Clark doesn’t trust Lana either. Well, it’s about time!

At the DP, Lois and Grant have lunch in Grant’s office. Grant rejects Lois’ latest article. Lana barges in. She asks if Grant wants a story. Grant is interested. Lana gives Grant the hard drive which, she says, contains proof that Lex hasn’t changed. She says that the drive contains info on project Scion.

Grant wants to know whether Lex just handed over his hard drive to Lana. Lana claims that it doesn’t matter where it came from. The world needs to know the kind of person Lex is. When Grant says he can’t print a story based on stolen information, Lana pushes him against the wall and orders him to print the story. When Lois tries to intervene she is thrown through the glass door of Grant’s office. I cheer as Lois lies unconscious.

Clark meets Lois and Chloe at the Smallville Medical Clinic. Lois snarks that Lana’s got issues. Clark asks if Lana did all this because of a story. Lois replies that, yes, Lana did for a story on Lex. Clark mentions that Lana broke into Lex’s safe. Lois says that it’s something about the Scion project and leaves.

Clark, still in denial, says that Lana would never hurt Lois intentionally; Lana is growing more aggressive the longer she has his powers.

Later, Lois is sneaking out of the hospital wearing a hospital gown. Er, why was she admitted at the hospital? She appeared to have injured her arm. And why is she sneaking out? Couldn’t she just check herself out? And why didn’t she get dressed first? Did someone steal her clothes? Eh, nevermind, it’s Lois.

She gets into the elevator to find Grant there with a bouquet of flowers. He makes fun of her outfit. Grant asks what she’s doing. Lois says she’s escaping. She says that there must be some truth to Lana’s story. She says that when she lands the big story, Grant will thank her. Grant warns her to stay away from the Luthors. He adds that he doesn’t want to lose his ace reporter. Lois says she understands; she says that she doesn’t deny the sexual tension that’s between them, but office romances never work out. Oh, Lois. She tells Grant to keep it in his pants; the fantasy is over. Oh, Lois.

At the DP, Clark wants to know if Chloe’s been able to locate Scion. Chloe remarks that Lex finally learned to cover his tracks. Hee! Clark replies that maybe for once (or twice or a hundred times) Lex doesn’t have anything to hide. Chloe says that Lex hasn’t changed. Clark theorizes that the powers have amped up Lana’s feelings; this is all in her head. I’m not sure I understand this. Chloe asks if Clark is trying to exonerate Lana.

Clark asks if Chloe knows what it’s like to think that someone close to you isn’t who you think… Chloe snarks if Clark’s really asking her that question. Clark asks about the Isis Foundation.

Lex talks with minion 20902 while driving his car. He wants to know if the alloy is responding to its environment or being controlled by something. Lex brakes suddenly when he spots Lana in the road. Lex’s cell phone falls on the passenger seat.

Chloe shows Clark the Isis foundation headquarters. Clark x-rays the wall. Chloe defends Lana until Clark forces the doors to the CoLL open. Chloe says that maybe Lana’s been hiding this because she doesn’t want them to know how depraved she is. Lol! Clark walks around the CoLL (see topmost pic). One of the screens is labeled Lex’s Mobile(see pic). Clark asks if Chloe can rewind the track. Chloe does. It’s Lana asking Lex where Project Scion is. Lex replies plant number 4.

At plant #4, Lana tosses Lex around. It looks like Swan’s office with large screens displaying Kryptonian symbols. Lex says he’s got nothing to hide and gives Lana the password. Lana realizes that Lex is still tracking aliens. No! Lex says that there’s a reason she went to him and not Clark; she trusted him (Lex). Lana says that’s over. Lex asks why Lana has been trailing him, spying on him, and stalking every move that he makes. Go, Lex! Lana says that she’s trying to stop him from hurting people. Lex claims that he’s trying to save people; he and Lana started this together; there’ll be more of those creatures coming to Earth.

Lana grabs Lex and threatens to torture him till he tells her what he’s up to. As Lana is about to zap Lex, Lex says that Clark is not like them; that they (Lex and Lana) understand each other. They kiss. Yay! Lana grabs Lex by the throat. He says that if she kills him, she’ll lose Clark forever. Lana pulls a Clark and throws him 30 feet.

Clark shows up and tells Lana to stop. He tells her that he’ll take care of Lex. Lana replies that Clark won’t because he is too afraid to get blood on his hands. Clark says that taking people’s lives is not their decision to make. Alright, Clark! Lana asks how many people would still be alive if Clark had had the guts to kill Lex a long time ago. They "fight". The vial containing Project Scion rolls towards Lana. Lana falls to the floor feeling the effects of the green K. She tells Clark that he could do anything but all he’s done is hide out on some farm. Clark replies that he’s protected the people he cares about.

Clark breaks the vial, grabs the green K, the live wire and Lana's hand to reverse the effects of the power transfer. The sentient being oozes away.

At the DP, Grant, on the phone, says he’s taking care of everything. He starts the deletion of the contents of the hard drive. Lois comes in to say that she’s hit a dead end on Project Scion (no kidding!). She says that she’d like to talk about what happened in the elevation. Grant kisses her. Lois says that sexual harassment could get her name on his door by tomorrow. Then she kisses him (see pic) as the content of Lex’s hard drive is erased. If that’s the real Lois Lane, I’m Cleopatra.

Clark comes into the mansion to ask whether Lex will press any charges against Lana. Lex says he won’t do anything. Clark doesn’t believe him. Hey, Clark, Lana set up her murder; framed Lex for it and is now shacking up with you and Lex has done nothing. Think, man!

Lex says that it’s ironic part is that he got what he wanted - Lana still has feelings for him. He wonders which is stronger Lana affection for Clark or her hatred for him. He adds that obsession outlives everything, even love. Clark says that Lana would never have done the things she did before she got with Lex. Lex counters that Clark taught her about betrayal first. Those morons really believe that Lana is so gullible and malleable that they are responsible for her actions? What about Lana being responsible for Lana’s actions? She’s not a child anymore; she’s an adult. It’s about time someone calls her out on her crap.

Lana enters the Isis Foundation to see Chloe waiting for her. The monitors display static. Lana thinks Lex cut her off. Chloe says that it wasn’t Lex. Lana says that she has a right to protect herself. She adds that she’s sorry she lied to Chloe but she didn’t think Chloe would understand.

Chloe says that Isis made sense when she thought that Lana was out to help the meteor infected. She says that in textbook talk Isis is the goddess of love, life and healing. Isis marched to the ends of the earth to help the man she loved. Chloe says that she wants Clark to have that kind of loyalty in his life but she’s not sure that he’ll get that from Lana. Yes, someone finally sees Lana for who she is. It’s about time. Hopefully it’s not retconned in the upcoming episodes.

Lana says that she’d do anything for Clark. Chloe adds "even kill. What a lucky guy". Chloe says that what the textbooks left out is that Isis is also the goddess of the underworld (yep, that’s Lana). Isis is responsible for bringing the great god Ra to his knees. Chloe says that Lana is capable of doing that to Clark and she’s not going to let that happen. The lines have been drawn!

Lex tells minion #20902 that unless he's ready for a front row seat to the apocalypse, 20902 better find the alloy. A lab technician wheels a tray of chemicals. On the tray is the alloy moving towards her. When the alloy touches her hand, her eyes turn dark (like a demon’s on Supernatural).

Emo music – the barn – it’s Clana barn scene number 9.94x10^342. Clark says that if it wasn’t for Lana they wouldn’t know that Lex is tracking Kryptonians. Lana wishes that Clark wouldn’t look at her like he’s never seen her before. Clark replies that he’s looking for a part he recognizes. Lana assures Clark that all of it was because of the powers. Clark replies that even before the powers she kidnapped Lionel. Lana says that she was trying to save Clark’s life. Clark asks if that justifies everything. Lana replies that she won’t apologize for going to extremes to protect the person she loves. Aw, how romantic – except it isn’t.

Clark states that Lana sounds like Lex. Lana can’t believe that Clark has never crossed the moral line to save someone. Clark looks crushed. Clark blames himself for all the lying; for not trusting Lana years ago and for her not trusting him now. Dope. Lana believes they’ll bounce back from this. I hope not. Clark’s not so sure; he can live with Lana changing but he has to accept responsibility for it. Lana tells him to stop blaming himself just so he doesn’t taint the image of her that he created. Whoa – Lana speaks the truth; although why would she be willing to taint her own image? She adds that she has to live with the decisions she’s made. Really? There’s a novel idea. All she needs it to know that Clark loves her no matter what. Clark doesn’t answer (see pic).
