I’m not sure how I feel about this episode. At times it didn’t seem to be moving fast enough. The last few scenes are interesting, however, because they answer the "why is Ruby helping Sam" question.
A nun is placing prayer books in the pews. She’s startled when she turns around to find a priest behind her. The priest smiles and hands her a prayer book. As he escorts her to her car, they see a man (Andy) on the choir balcony. Andy tells the priest that God is not with them; He can’t help them and if He can, He won’t. He commits suicide. The nun screams. Whoa, now that scream was scary.
Bobby and Dean are working on preparing the weapons. Sam comes in with a paper. He says that he might have found some demonic omens in Ohio – dry lightning, barometric pressure drop, one guy commits suicide and another goes postal in a hobby shop before he’s shot by police. Dean is not convinced. Sam answers that it’s the best lead they’ve got.
Sam and Dean tease Bobby about the colt Bobby is fixing. Bobby is not amused; the boys are though. I love the interaction among the guys. They’ve got an ugly job to do but they haven’t lost their sense of humor.
As the boys leave for Ohio, Bobby tells them to call if they need anything – sounds very ominous.
Ohio: Sam and Dean pose as insurance investigators to talk to the priest. The priest tells them that Andy seemed to change two months before; one day he was Andy then next he wasn’t. He says the town also changed around the same time. When Sam asks if it seemed like Andy was possessed, the priest says yes. The priest says that the guy who went postal also seemed to be possessed.
Sam and Dean quickly realize that the change in the town coincides with when the Devils Gate was opened (see pic).
Dean is amused to see a mirror above the bed in their hotel room. As he’s closes the hotel room door he sees an old friend from school – Richie and his step sis (see pic). They reminisce. Richie says that the suicide and the postal guys were already dead when he came into town and he can’t prove they were possessed. When asked if anyone else fits the profile of upstanding citizen turned douche, Richie replies Trotter who used to be head of the rotary club, until he brought in the hookers, gambling and practically owns the town. He says that Sam and Dean can find him at the bar he owns.
Trotter’s Bar: Dean is obviously enjoying himself. Sam looks constipated. They meet Richie. Dean ogles the bartender. Richie says she's off limits as he’s got something going with her. I like Richie. The priest listens in as Dean is admires the bartender’s ass. The boys are obviously embarassed(see pic). When Sam asks what the priest is doing at a bar, he replies he goes where his flock is.
Just then a blond guy walks into the bar. He looks possessed (well, at least to me). He has a gun. He shoots his friend then turns the gun on himself. Dean tackles him while Sam pours holy water on him. Stunned, the guy asks what Sam is doing. He explains that the guy he shot slept with his wife. Hehehe – it’s not a possession then. Sam spots Trotter; Trotter looks back at Sam. The police arrest the guy. Dean realizes that Richie is missing.
Richie is with the bartender. She leads him to a really creepy basement. He asks if she gets scared down there. She replies not while she has a hunter to protect her. She's a demon. Richie takes out a knife but he's too late - he is killed. Hey, I liked Richie!
Next morning, Dean is worried about Richie. Dean says he going to try to find Richie. Sam says he’s going to trail Trotter; he didn’t like the way Trotter looked at him the night before.
Bobby is checking the colt when Ruby shows up. When she shows him that she’s a demon, Bobby shoots her. She’s fine – although she’s mad about her shirt. She asks if he wants her to help him with the gun.
Sam is sneaking around Trotter’s headquarters when his cell phone rings. It’s Dean. Sam says it’s not a good time. One of Trotter’s goons comes out to check on the noise. Sam is gone.
At the bar, a girl comes onto Dean. Dean brags that anyone could have tackled the guy, wrestled the gun away, and prevented mass murder. Milking it for all it’s worth, eh Dean. She’s a hooker and Dean’s not interested. He asks the bartender to have a drink with him after her shift. She replies why wait.
When Trotter and his goon leave, Sam sneaks into the office looking for what exactly – I don’t know. Trotter and his goon come back. Sam beats the goon and manages to get the gun off Trotter. Trotter tells him to take the money and go. Sam replies he doesn’t want the money that he just wants to be sure. He throws holy water at Trotter and his goon. Trotter is seriously confused. Sam realizes he’s made a terrible mistake. Uh oh! Awkward! Sam apologizes profusely, takes the bullets out of the gun, leaves the gun and wishes them a nice day. Ha!
The bartender leads Dean to the creepy basement. Dean tells her that he tracked Richie through the GPS in his cell phone (yeah, Smart-Dean!). He says that he was by earlier and he gave Richie a proper burial. When the demon tries to attack Dean, she hits a wall and falls indelicately on the floor. Dean pushes back the carpet to reveal a Devil’s Trap.
Dean starts the exorcism to send the demon back. The demon produces a strong wind that tears Dean’s book and crumbles the walls around them. They’re trapped.
When Dean tries to recite the exorcism spell from memory, he fails. He says that he’s got someone coming for him. The demon answers that she’s got someone coming too. It’s a race to see who gets help first.
Sam at the bar is looking for Dean. He asks the bartender if he’s seen Dean. The bartender is vague until Sam pulls out some money. He gives Sam the bartender’s address.
Back in the basement, Dean tries to get his cell to work. The demon says it’s futile and to act civil. Dean says that what she did to Richie wasn’t civil. The demon says she was defending herself. When Dean mentions the people that have died, the demon says that all she did was pointed out to Trotter the money a few businesses that cater to harmless vice could bring him. Trotter took it from there. All she has to do is nudge humans in the right direction because humans are corrupt, weak.
Sam goes to Casey’s house looking for Dean. He finds sulfur.
In the basement, Casey says that humans racked up a body count that amazes even the demons.
At the bar, Sam calls Bobby for help. He sees the priest. That guy’s always drinking at the bar.
In the basement, Casey explains that the demons’ God is Lucifer. She says that Dick Cheney has a parking spot reserved downstairs. Dean asks what “downstairs” is like. She says that with the trouble Dean’s caused, he won’t be getting the presidential suite. She says it’s bad, that’s why the demons want out.
At the bar, Dean asks about Casey. This scene really drags as Sam awkwardly asks about Casey. He says that he thinks that Dean and Casey are in trouble. The priest says if Casey’s in trouble he’s going with Sam. The priest is a demon – too obvious.
In the basement, the demon tells Dean that he’s alright and that he’s likeable (oh, yah). She says what he did for his brother is nice. Dean says it’s liberating. She asks if Dean is scared that he’s only got a year to live. Dean says no (see pic). He doesn’t seem too convinced though.
In the car, Sam and the priest make small talk. The priest asks if Sam thought about doing something other than insurance investigating. The priest says that Sam looks like an intelligent (me: albeit mopey) kid who could do some great things in front of the pack. Sam replies he likes what he’s doing.
Casey stretches on the floor (gratuitous sexy scene – it is the CW). Anywho, Dean asks what happens now that the Gate opened. He adds that he doesn’t see ”a big honkin’ plan”. She replies that there was a plan and that the yellow-eyed demon was going to lead them. Dean mock apologizes for killing the YED. He asks if there was a chain of command. Casey says that it was Sam. Sam was supposed to lead them but he hasn’t stepped up to the plate. She says that now there’s chaos and many of the demons are after Sam. She adds that she was ready to follow Sam.
Sam and the priest arrive at the basement. Dean yells that he’s in the basement. When Sam says he’s there with the priest, Dean looks at Casey (who doesn’t look worried) and tells Sam to be careful. Sam takes out the holy water. Bobby shows up but the demon throws Bobby twenty feet, then throws Sam into the windshield of a car (eh, I feel like I’m watching Smallville). Bobby gives Sam the gun; Ruby tells Sam to go.

The priest breaks into the basement. When Dean lunges toward him, Dean is propelled backward. The demon breaks the Devil’s Trap and kisses Casey. Dean gets up and the priest grabs him by the neck. Casey begs for the priest not to kill Dean. Sam shoots the priest. Dean tries to stop Sam from shooting Casey but Sam has a very determined look on his face and shoots her (see pic).
Later, Dean and Bobby talk about what happened. Dean wonders whether this war really is a losing battle. He tells Bobby what the YED told him about Sam; that Sam came back but different. Dean asks if Bobby thinks that Sam is different. Bobby answers that demons lie and Sam’s okay. Dean agrees.
At the hotel, Ruby tells Sam he did well – he killed two demons. Sam says that he killed two humans too. Ruby counters that when demons piggyback human bodies they leave them to die a slow and painful death. Sam tells Ruby that she’s a cold bitch. He takes the gun as Ruby reminds him that he needs help with Dean’s problem. Sam threatens to shoot her, but then puts the gun down. She says that Sam will have to do things that go against his gentle nature. He replies that he doesn’t have to like it. Ruby's starting to get on my nerves.
