SV: 7-3 "Fierce" Review

Wow. This episode was pretty bad. The back half of s6 was pretty much swept under the rug as if nothing happened. Ah, the power of the retcon.

At the Cream Corn Festival, Clark is trying to convince Kara to blend in. She sees Jimmy from afar; her heat vision acts up. Clark notices and tells her to cool down; he mumbles that it’s happened to him a few times. Tom Welling plays embarrassed very well. The heat vision effect was different - I think it's better.

Kara is handed a Miss Cream Corn flyer. She gets a gleam in her eye and tells Clark she’s going to like blending in.

Cut to new credits: Clark, Lex, Lana, Chloe, the rest and Lionel. Perfect!

Clark is working on a tracker in the barn with Shelby. Aw, Shelby is so cute. Lana walks into the barn wearing white (she’s good this week!) with golden light all around her. Shelby barks but stays by Clark. Protect Clark, Shelby. That’s a good dog! Clark doesn’t hear Lana approaching (ha! she doesn’t trigger his hearing like Chloe does). They hug. It’s the most anti-climatic reunion ever and I’m bored.

Cut to evil pageant contestant talking on the cell phone. She says that this time it’s her turn and by the end of the week they’ll be in Cabo with the money. Suddenly the room she’s in freezes over. I guess no Cabo then?

At the Kent farm, Clark and Lana talk about what happened. Clark says that Lana didn’t trust him enough to let him help her. Lana says she was trying to protect him. Clark replies that he’s not used to being the one that needs protecting. Yes, Clark Kent – damsel in distress. Yuk! I should have fast forwarded through this drivel.

Clark smiles thinking how Chloe will react when she finds out Lana is alive. Lana gets all lanaish and tells him they can’t tell Chloe. She (Lana) committed a serious crime (ya think?!) and wasn’t supposed to ever come back to SV. Her name needs to be cleared before she can reappear in SV. Clark, in his infinite wisdom when it comes to Lana, doesn’t ask what “serious crime”. Or how she set up her “murder”? Or about the body and DNA that was found at the scene? Or how she could let an innocent man be arrested for her “murder”? Or whether she’s still married to Lex? Or why keep that she’s alive from Chloe? You know the really yucky questions.

Instead, Clark nods and tells her to stay at the farm with him. Okaaay. He’s agreed to harbor a fugitive who has committed a serious crime. But, hey, it’s okay. It’s Lana and she’s amazing. Now if it was Lex or anyone else, Clark would be encouraging that person to go to the authorities (hmm, like Alicia in “Pariah” maybe?). Whatever.

Gratuitous bikini scene ahead: Kara shows up in a bikini. Clark tells Kara that when he mentioned fitting in, he was thinking of something with more clothes. I love embarrassed Clark! She asks like undercover. Clark sputters yes and orders Kara to change. Kara is instantaneously dressed – Lana just smiles (isn’t she just the perfect girlfriend?). Lana says something witty (or not) and leaves.

When Kara brings up Clark’s football days, Clark agrees to the Miss Corn Pageant but only after Kara practices control of her powers. In an excellent scene that’s reminiscent of a scene in “Heat” with Jonathan and Clark in the field with scarecrows, Clark sets a watermelon down and proceeds to carve a happy face with his heat vision. He asks Kara to give it a shot. She blasts the watermelon with heat vision sending it exploding onto Clark. Clark is mad. Kara says she’ll fit in her way.

At the Talon the contestants are busy fixing their hair and makeup. Kara looks longingly at other contestants' makeup. She walks over to ask if they could help her with her makeup. They sneer at her. Kara goes outside and discovers the popsicled contestant.

Cut to LuthorCorp – Lex is forlornly fingering his wedding band (he hasn’t disposed of it yet?). The government agent from last week (Agent Carter from the Department of Domestic Security) shows up. Lex tells him that he knows about the spaceship they found. Agent Carter replies he wants to talk about Lex’s latest obsession – he shows Lex the drawing of Kara.

Jimmy and Chloe at the DP – Jimmy shows Chloe the image of the frozen contestant. He says it has “meteor freak” written all over it and encourages Chloe to go to Smallville to investigate. Grant shows up talking to Lois on the phone. He calls her “L.”. Jimmy and Chloe look at each other as Jimmy mouths “L?” - Too cute.

Grant spots the pic of the “ice princess” and praises Chloe for finally finding something newsworthy. Jimmy takes that opportunity to introduce himself. Grant shakes his hand, calling him “Panda Boy”, barely acknowledging he’s there. Can this guy get any more arrogant?

Grant tells “Chloester” to take “Panda Boy” and head to SV to cover the Miss Cream Corn Pageant story. Chloe asks Jimmy how much blunt force trauma can be caused to the back of the head with a stapler. Yeah! Go, Chloe! Jimmy tells Chloe that she’s busting her butt trying to get stories of substance while Lois is in New York grabbing all the glory (because that’s what reporters do). He appeals to Chloe’s competitive side.

Pointless Clark/Lana scene at the Kent farm - ‘nuff said.

Gratuitous scantly clad women dancing scene – Jimmy takes tons of pictures of Kara. The sheriff talks to the pageant organizer about the girl found dead. Jimmy focuses his camera on two contestants who are clearly guilty of something. They leave.

Jimmy runs to his car calling Chloe on his cell to tell her he might have a break in the story. Evil weather girl follows him. She touches the car and the car’s interior freezes over. Kara breaks the door to rescue Jimmy. Weather girl sees her.

Lex walks into the Kent farm without knocking. Lana is waiting for him. She pissily asks Lex why her name is not cleared yet. Lex says that he’s made sure the evidence is destroyed (oh, I hope not!), the guy who went to prison died of natural causes – Lana is a free woman. Lex tells Lana that every horrible thing he did was because he truly loves her. Sigh – Lex, you’re free of Lana. Rejoice!

Lex tells Lana that his lawyer is drawing up a settlement agreement. Lana arrogantly tells him she doesn’t need his money. Lex counters that she doesn’t need his money because she’s already siphoned $10 million. He tells her he’s applauding her. It’s not everyday someone manages a coup like that. Oh, Lex, please tell me you’re playing Lana!

At the hospital, Kara is watching an unconscious Jimmy when Clark and Chloe show up. Clark angrily asks Kara whether anyone saw her use her powers. Kara says Clark should be proud of her and leaves. Chloe sides with Kara.

Chloe fills Clark in on the weather girls. They acquired their weather controlling meteor abilities in the last meteor shower. They’ve been going from city to city entering contests and committing major heists. Huh? Wouldn’t it be cleverer to go from city to city without calling attention to yourself? It’s like they’re advertising they’ve arrived and then commit a crime. They really are pretty stupid.

Back at the pageant the weather girls approach Kara. They know she has powers and want her help. They show her a pic of the treasure. Kara, recognizing a Kryptonian artifact, agrees. Later the map is stolen from the time capsule. The evil weather girls suspect Kara.

Gratuitous bikini scene again – ‘nuff said.

Back at Luthor mansion, Lex tells Agent Carter about his rescue. Lex says he's looking for the girl in the drawing because he believes she saved him. But she didn’t just save him from the river; she saved him from drowning in the evil of his ways. Oy. Government agent doesn’t look impressed. And nor do I. He hands the agent all his research on the spaceships.

At the pageant Kara is crowned Miss Cream Corn and is promptly arrested. At the jail, Clark convinces Kara to stay put until Chloe can get her out legally. She explains that the map she stole points to a treasure from Krypton.

Clark shows up just as the two weather girls open the treasure box. Inside is the House of El symbol with a Kryptonian character etched on it. Clark tells them it wasn’t meant for them. The weather girls use their weather power on him disturbing some Green K in the process. Clark falls to the ground in obvious pain.

Kara shows up (huh? Wasn’t she supposed to be in jail? Chloe got her out that fast?). She uses Charlie’s Angels kick moves to knock the contestants out. She approaches Clark, but Clark warns her away. She uses heat vision to destroy the Green K?!?! Wow. There had to have been a better way for Kara to save Clark than blast the Green K with heat vision. Heating Green K results in Black K (see: “Onyx”).

Clark apologizes for giving Kara a hard time. He thanks her for saving him (yay, more damsel in distress Clark). He tells her that she's right. She needs to adapt to her powers on her own.

Back at the farm, Clark and Kara conclude that the Kryptonian symbol is an SOS and that the Kryptonian who sent it is still on Earth. Kara tells Clark that she got a job at the Talon in an attempt to “fit in”. Why would Clark be okay with that? The Talon belongs to Lex. Clark tells Kara that “she is one of us, now”. Kara responds that they are not human – no matter how much “fitting in” they try to do. Clark tells her that everyone he loves is on Earth but Kara is quick to point out that Clark is immortal (and immoral but we’re supposed to ignore that) and he’s fooling himself if he thinks he can hide out on the farm and grow old with Lana.

LuthorCorp – Lex minion shows up to tell Lex that the girl was found right where Lex said she’d be. Cool. Lex knows “his savior” is another Kent.

Cut to the Talon where Chloe and Jimmy walk in. Jimmy admits that Chloe was right – sooner or later all meteor freaks snap. Chloe looks uncomfortable. Jimmy says that from now on it’s open season on the infected. Kara comes into the Talon. Jimmy ogles her; with Chloe looking on. Stupid Jimmy (although Chloe doesn’t appear to be too heartbroken).

Clark and Lana are walking hand in hand at the Harvest Festival. Lana tells Clark she wants to grow old with him. Clark smiles wistfully. The best thing in that scene is TW. He looks great – even Supermanly (see pic(*)).

Kara leaves the Talon and meets Lex. Lex cuts to the chase, thanking Kara for saving his life. Kara pretends to not know what he’s talking about. Lex insists that she ripped the roof off his car (much like Clark in the Pilot). Lex promises that he won’t tell anyone; that Kara secret is safe with him. He says that he’s already protected her - like he would have protected others had they told him the truth (Clark!). Kara denies everything again. Lex counters that he’s been pulled from the brink of death twice by a member of the Kent family and he doesn’t believe in coincidences. He says that sooner or later he’ll find out the truth. He asks her “Are you a savior or are you a warning?”. Loved this scene. Now there's a competent Lex Luthor.

With the exception of a couple of cool scenes, this episode was horrid.
