SN: 3-1 "The Magnificent Seven" Review

I liked this episode although it didn't feel like a season premiere.

Then:
Sam is stabbed and dies; Dean sells his soul to the crossroads demon – Sam is brought back and Dean has one year to live. Dean kills the yellow-eyed demon but the Devil’s Gate is opened long enough to release demons on Earth. In a nutshell, all hell’s breaking loose.

Now:
Oakdale, Illinois, nighttime – Bearded dude takes out the garbage (the bag doesn’t even look full!). As he heads back in, the garbage cans start shaking. He looks perplexed. Lights flicker. Strange fog appears in the sky. Dude keeps watching, finally wisens up and runs towards the house. Too late - bearded dude is possessed by a demon.

Sam is reading a book in the Impala. Dean momentarily appears at a window and gives Sam the thumbs up (see pic). Sam’s cell phone rings. Bobby tells Sam that he has a job for them. Sam goes in the house to get Dean… he goes in at an inopportune moment. Sam contemplates gouging his eyes out with Dean’s knife.

They head to Lincoln, Nebraska where there is report of crop failure and a swarm of cicadas…

Lincoln, Nebraska: The Impala pulls up at a house behind Bobby’s car. Cicadas are buzzing loudly. When there’s no answer at the house they let themselves in and are immediately assaulted by a putrid smell. Dean points out that it’s not a good sign. In the living room, they find a family of three decomposing bodies watching TV. Eww!

Dean hears something outside and goes to investigate. A big guy with a rifle comes out of nowhere, hits Dean with the rifle then points the rifle at him. Hmm, it appears that Bobby knows Isaac and Tamera. They shake hands over Dean’s injured body. I love that the scene is from Dean’s perspective.

Sam makes small talk with the newcomers. He asks how they got started hunting. The husband and wife look at each other. Oops. Sammy backpedals and says it’s none of his business. After talking with the coroner’s office, Dean says that the family sat down and never got up. They died of dehydration and starvation.

Sam suggests they all work together. Isaac says that he and Tamera are not teaming with the “damn fools that let the Devils Gate open in the first place”. Bobby looks uncomfortable, Dean looks mad and Sam looks guilty. Isaac and Tamera leave. Outside, a blond woman watches the house.

Next day, bearded dude goes into a store, putting a hand on a woman’s shoulder he points out a nice pair of shoes that another woman is buying. She agrees with him. She follows the woman out and proceeds to bash her head on the windshield of a car. Once the woman is dead, she takes the shoe bag and leaves.

Later, in the store Dean is consoling a pretty blond. Sam asks what he’s doing. Dean begins to cough. He reminds Sam that he doesn’t have much time left and he’s making every second count (see pic). Dean is really milking this for all it’s worth. I wonder how long it’ll take Sam to say something.

Bobby, dressed in a spiffy suit, says he talked to the suspect and it doesn’t appear to be a demon possession. She just really wanted the shoes. When Bobby asks if they’ve found anything, Dean points to the surveillance camera. After looking at the surveillance tape, they split up to look for information on the bearded dude.

The blond girl, from before, follows Sam.

Midnight, Dean and Bobby sit in Bobby’s car outside a bar that bearded dude frequents. Sam bangs on the window, scaring Dean. Dean is not amused. Bearded dude’s name is Walter Rosen who went missing a week ago – the night the demons escaped through Devils Gate. Rosen shows up and heads into the bar. Dean is ready to follow but Bobby stops him. He says that they don’t know what to expect and should just tail him. Dean argues. Just then Isaac and Tamera head into the bar.

In the bar, Isaac and Tamera sit at a table. Isaac, holding a bottle of holy water, gets up but is stopped by the bar owner. He says he doesn’t like hunters in his bar. The rest of the bar’s patrons surround them – they are all demons. Outside, Bobby, Sam and Dean are desperately trying to break into the bar.

Isaac is told to drink Drain X. Isaac chug-a-lugs as Tamera screams and the demons laugh (and I avert my eyes). Isaac falls down dead. Just then Bobby, Dean and Sam smash into the bar in Bobby’s car. They throw holy water on the demons as Sam ushers Tamera into the car. In all the commotion, Dean manages to stuff Rosen in the trunk of the car.

At the house, Tamera wants to go back for Isaac. Dean says he’s going with her. Sam argues that they’ll be killed. Dean counters that he’s dead man walking. Sam says that they don’t even know how many demons there are. Bobby says that they do. They’re up against the seven deadly sins – live and in the flesh. Dean tries for a joke. The others are not amused. I think it’s funny but it’s definitely inappropriate. The family was touched by the Sloth Demon; the woman in the store by the Envy Demon (Rosen); and Isaac by the Glutton Demon.

Tamera is ready to take them down. Bobby *calmly* tells her they’ve tried it her way – now they’re going to step back, take a breath, and *yelling* figure out what their next move is (see pic). Envy starts to laugh. Sam asks what the demons are after. Envy answers that they already have what they want – they’re free. He asks which one of them (Dean, Bobby, Tamera, or Sam) will throw the first stone. He says that Dean is a billboard for Lust and Gluttony; Tamera is full of Wrath; humans are animals and they’ll be slaughtered as animals. Envy adds that the other demons will come for him. Dean answers that they won’t find Envy as he’ll be in hell. Envy looks worried. Tamera performs the exorcism.

Dean tells Bobby and Sam to take Tamera and leave. He’ll try to hold the demons back. He’s got a death wish! Sam says that it they are going down, they’ll go down together. They prepare and wait for the demons.

Tamera hears Isaac outside calling her. He bangs on the door and says that Tamera just left him at the bar after they swore they’d never leave each other. Tamera is weakening. Bobby tells her that Isaac is dead and his body is now possessed by one of the demons. “Isaac” yells that Tamera just let him die just like she let their daughter die the night those “those things” came for her (their daughter).

Tamera opens the door and rushes towards “Isaac”. She drives a steak into his heart. The five other demons enter the house. Glutton follows Bobby. Bobby smiles when the demon stands below the symbol.

Dean moves away from a pretty blond demon. It figures he’d get the pretty one. She’s Lust and she tries to seduce Dean. Dean doesn’t fight too hard - they kiss.

Meanwhile Sam is fending off three demons. Pride says that all the demons have heard of Sam Winchester. He calls Sam “the prodigy” and “the boy king”. But Pride is not impressed. He says that with the yellow eyed demon dead, it is open season on Sam.

Dean is still kissing Lust when he moves her to a tub of holy water. He pushes and holds her head underwater.

Sam is pummeled by the three demons. The blond girl that was following Sam earlier shows up. She slices the demons with a knife. Sam is stunned (see pic). He asks who she is – she answers that she’s the girl who saved his life.

Sam and Dean burn the bodies of those that died during the exorcisms. Sam wonders what kind of blade kills demons. Dean teasingly asks Sam how come a girl can fight better than he (Sam) can. Sam counters that he was fighting three demons at once. You tell him, Sam.

Tamera leaves. Bobby tells Sam and Dean to watch for omens. Before Bobby leaves, Sam asks whether Bobby believes that they can win this war. Bobby doesn’t answer.

Heading back to the car, Dean asks Sam where they should go. Sam answers Louisiana. Tamera told him about a voodoo priest that might be able to help Dean get out of his deal with the demon. Dean says no. Sam is fed up. He says that he’s been busting his ass trying to help Dean and Dean couldn’t care less. He asks if Dean has a death wish. Ha – that’s what I thought too (see above).

Dean explains that if they go after the crossroads demon, Sam will die. Sam calls Dean a hypocrite. He reminds Dean about how he felt when their dad sold his soul to save him (Dean). He says that Dean was very torn up. Sam calls Dean selfish. Dean replies that he’s okay with that. He adds that he’s tired and he sees a light at the end of the tunnel. Sam correctly points out that it’s probably hellfire. Dean answers that he’s got a year to live and he wants to make the most of it.

It’s not the best season premiere but I enjoyed the snark, teasing and banter between the boys. And, yeah, Dean acted like a jerk but it's understandable.

Welcome back, Supernatural!
